Hi Chris I wanted to thank you for doing this write-up. Today I successfully did my first ever oil change on my (new to me) '03. Your writeup was super helpful. Only slight hickup was that I leaked a bit of oil when I pulled the filter out. I should have followed your advice and put some rags down instead of trying to use a funnel. Oh well. Next time.

(I hope it's OK that I'm bumping an older thread)

Transmission

Chris.. You need a disclaimer..
I had followed your guide a bit, and decided to change my oil with synthetic.
I ended up draining 4 quarts of my transmission fluid, putting 5 quarts of engine oil into the engine oil part, (total of 11 quarts in the engine oil bay), and then realizing.. So I drained all my engine oil, and refilled everything up.

Maybe if I had really studied your post, I would have been fine.

Is it okay if I don't have a replacement gasket? I'm not sure what shape mine is in, but I don't have a new one and I need to change it.

Also, I only have 5 quarts of oil, so I guess I need to go get some more... ugh.

You don't necessarily have to change it. they can last more than one change.

Thanks for this thread. I'm a newbie to working on my own vehicles, and used this guide to help me change the oil in my 2001 xtracab prerunner.

Toyota couldn't have put the oil filter in a worse place on the 3.4!

Thanks for the writeup though, Chris!
