(See 4.0L 1GR 2nd Gen Oil Change for 2nd Gen Tacomas)

First, You want to make sure you have all your things ready to do the oil change:
    Needle nose Pliers
    3/8" ratchet wrench
    4" extension (3/8")
    14mm socket (3/8")
    Filter wrench
    5.5 quarts oil
    Oil Filter
    Oil Catch Pan
    Lots of rags

    5VZoilchange001_080463746756a4b8c1cf5e26876f5037640dc811.jpg

You want to park your truck on a level surface, with the front wheels turned all the way to the left.
Locate the Oil drain plug, and useing a 14mm socket, and extension, remove the plug, and drain the oil.

    5VZoilchange004_cebc17a02c1739dff3ba8c6f9393dc91b31c592f.jpg

    5VZoilchange003_09cadc04bba23a6c7fba5b5f7bebcafbbe2b3436.jpg

While the oil is draining, Look into the driver side wheel well. Useing the Needle Nose pliers, remove the push pins holding the wheel well liner on.

    5VZoilchange005_d409466c9b1b058990fff078f4c7d228f07b8cbf.jpg

You will then see the oil filter.

    5VZoilchange006_c38313378443017d47c52a6457414562df802459.jpg

Place a bunch of rags under the filter, on top of the skid plates, so as to absorb any oil that spills from the filter when its removed.
Remove the old oil filter, and clean the filter mount of any dirt around it.

    5VZoilchange008_c404c3654b4d3980a997aa1e31bd3de04de1dcd7.jpg

On the new filter, Lubricate the filter gasket.

    5VZoilchange009_cd5199ad6d0e06e669d406c31dc2d69b44662dc0.jpg

    Then install the new filter.

    5VZoilchange010_e51086f839bdbb6cdca7477bb6d38972f0f93190.jpg

Check the oil pan to make sure the gasket is not stuck to it.

    5VZoilchange011_2948c92b8adc65058d1b3a7cbba566649cc44866.jpg

Clean the Oil pan around the drain plug, install the new gasket, and drain plug. Tighten the drain plug to 29 ft-lbs.

    5VZoilchange012_4e7e5bae91f9e1fcb01ddeb1432fe548173814e2.jpg

Fill the engine with 5.5 Quarts of your favorite oil.

    5VZoilchange014_741ee388ea0e7806ff2fbe144dd1d851fd5e9524.jpg

Start the engine, and let it run for a few mins., then shut it off. Check for leaks around the drain plug, and filter, then check the oil level.

    All done! :)

Take the used oil to a local oil recycling drop off in your area. Most Auto parts stores will take your used oil for free.

Never knew that about the fender weld to get to the oil filter. I have been reaching up from the bottom. This looks much easier.

It means, set the torque wrench to "29 lbs-ft", and tighten the nut/bolt. :)

isnt there a cleaner way of getting the filter off without spilling the oil all over the freakin place? i just bought mine and when i changed the oil it went freakin every where. all over the skid plates and everything. it was dripping for a week. i thought i developed a new leak at first.

yeah and thats teh only way i could figure out how to get to the filter to start with without this thread. idk why it make such a mess. i think i may have read something about a check valve in certain filters....maybe....idk....maybe im hilucinating. ive never heard of something like that before until i got on here so maybe im not.

I have the same problem as s2k, not sure if we have different skids or what but mine has no place for the oil to drip from the filter other than on the skid then goes everywhere..

Use a 2-litre plastic bottle and cut the bottom off (about 4" from the bottom). Wedge that up in there underneath the filter & the lip. Unscrew the filter and let the oil run into the bottle. I would also let the oil filter drop in there. It is somewhat difficult snaking the bottle (with oil in it) out...but it's much better than having oil everywhere.
