Just so we're clear; this mod works on TRD Sport models with 4x4 correct?

So I have a 2010 sr5 tacoma. I snipped the second yellow wire down with the smaller black tracer, then plug my battery back in. 4Hi seems to work fine but when i engage in 4Lo the light flashes and a continuous beep. That means 4Lo is not engaged? correct? I don't know what is wrong.

    EDIT*
nvm guys i found out i wasn't engaging into 4Lo correctly. I forgot you have to put it in neutral first then shift to 4Lo

    YEA!! :D

Have you used 4 LOW before?

The TRAC makes a big difference...

I would be curious to compare TRAC HI/LO (after the yellow wire mod) on your guys' trucks (vacuum brake booster) with TRAC HI/A-TRAC LO (hydraulic brake booster) on the Off Road TRDs in actual four wheeling.

    Have fun!!

6% Tint all around, Toyota all-weather floor mats, Toyota bed extender and skid plate, Python 991 remote-start alarm, oem cruise control and class III hitch were all installed within a couple months. I then installed Icon c/o's and Icon's 3-leaf aal with 17x9" GA9's and 285/70/17 Goodyear Duratrac's. The DRL mod was done, as was a custom rack setup similar to the org. cross bars. Blacked out headlights bought online, and a BOSS 1500 under-seat sub installed along with a Pioneer double-din DVD player
my wiring looks nothing like the other pics... my very top 25-pin connector has a gold/mustard-with-black wire in the upper left corner, then a yellow-with-black-stripe wire below that and then a yellow-only wire in the 3rd spot from the top. Before I go cutting anything, please give me some advice as to which exact wire it is. I'm guessing it's the yellow w/ black stripe wire (2nd from the top - left row), but I do NOT want to cut the wrong wire. Thanks!

The above vids are my 2009, SR5, not my 2010 O.R.
The top video is of me stuck without TRAC, 2nd is a follow up video of me turning on TRAC and driving out.
The bottom video is my truck completely stuck, most of the weight of the rear of the truck is on the spare tire (underneath, the box), and the front left is in the air, last is when I pushed the VSC button, activating TRAC, and slowly drove out. Without the TRAC mod, I would be calling a tow truck, on the first set, on the second set, I would be backing out in shame.
Both times I used 2nd gear, around 2000 rpms to get TRAC to transfer enough torque to get me out.
Kudo's to CROM who posted the vids!

Nice to see the action of open differentials vs. TRAC... on a non-A-TRAC truck (ie. one with the vacuum break booster). More wheel spin is allowed before the LSD action transfers torque to the traction tires.

On an A-TRAC truck (with the hydraulic brake booster), the wheel spin halt would be sooner in H4 with TRAC and almost non-existant in L4 with A-TRAC.

Unless Hemi or others who did it say differently, I believe any NON OFF ROAD 4WD TRD late model Tacoma (that has TRAC/VSC/AUTO LSD, but not A-TRAC) can do the mod and get TRAC while in L4.

Crom, since my last Tacoma was a 2005, and the new gizmos were not yet available... just when was TRAC/VSC/AUTO LSD available on Tacomas... not until 2009? I thought I read that TRAC was available before 2009? If so, wouldn't the yellow wire mod work for them, too?

My understanding is that VSC/TRAC was a sand alone optional equipment from years 2005-2008; it became standard equipment in the year 2009+.

Here is a Toyota document which shows the options for year 2005.

I think you are correct if they had TRAC it should work for them too. However, I would also consult the wiring diagram for that year truck just to make sure that nothing changed between the years/models. I know from experience that sometimes things do.

Can anyone help w/ the wiring?? (Post #186 ^^)...If not I will go for the yellow w/ black stripe wire (2nd down from the top left) and just be ready to re-connect it if that's not it.

It's just that my top left wire is gold and black, and then I have a yellow-only wire below the yellow w/ black stripe. But, you've given me confidence to try the yellow w/ black stripe. Thanks

That picture was from a standard cab truck... I see yours is double cab. If you want to post a picture of yours, it would be super helpful.

Here is a partial picture of a wire diagram for a 2009 which you can see the yellow-black wire would interrupt the Transfer indicator Switch signal.

the way it works is L4 in the wiring diagram is a signal wire. i tells the computer when the actuator moves (in) engaging 4lo. the actuator is basically a 3 position servo. 2hi/4hi/4lo. (servos recieve a signal telling the motor position 1,2,3) so as previously posted in the thread this will not harm actuator motor because the motor knows where to stop. the signal wire you are cutting makes the computer not recognize that the servo moved thus leaving settings (TRAC) on as if you were still in 4hi. If by chance you go to 4lo but something is stopping the servo ,gears not meshed (mechanical) or foot not on the clutch (electrical), there is a separate wire that sends a signal for the alarm "beeping".

NOTE: I did cut the wrong wire. My truck would not start. It cranked but would not start. no power going to the ignition system. After repairing the wire and cutting the right one the truck started but the check engine light was on. I left the battery out over night (to reset system bios) and put it in, in the morn. and the light was out.

Cutting the wrong wire will not harm the truck. you will just need to repair it and then reset system bios, whether by using OBD II or removing the battery for several minutes. there is nothing that will "burn up".

I make these statments based on my experience. dont call and blame me if YOU jack something up...

Glad you think so!! I was pumped when I had my 2009 and did this mod. It was like night and day. Funny, it hasn't even made the cheap mods list. Blows my mind.........
