it is by far the easiest mod i have done to my truck... you could have even done the mod right there on the trail. it takes no tools (ecept for something to cut the wire. which could be anything from nail clippers to a sharp rock) :D

I briefly thought about doing it right then and there. The problem though was that it'd been a few months since I read this thread so couldn't be sure about exactly which wire I should be dicking with. Last thing I needed at that point would have been cutting something I shouldn't! I think that would've gone something like this-

    Now which one was it...
    Uh-Oh...

I have the same truck as you. Just wanted to how this has worked out for you? Have you been out wheeling to try it out? Is it the same wire as on other years?

So...whats up with all the down hill? A 2wd truck could do that.

So I found the photo on page three. I went out to my truck and there is some differences on the colors. The photo here shows only 2 yellows in spots 1 and 2. On my 2012 the first three are yellow. Anyone cut the second one on a 2012 yet. Is it still the right one?

Okay, so here I am two months later staring down the barrel of a trip into the desert tomorrow and still hadn't gotten off my ass and done this mod. I finally did it today and I removed the terminal from the plug as btkicker referenced. Tried it with a pick and a too-large jeweler's screwdriver with no luck, so had to eventually dig through the bottom of my toolbox to find my tiniest driver. Only real pain about it was that, once the clip released, the terminal got stuck partway out. Wouldn't come out or go back in. Just kept dicking with it and dicking with it until it finally gave. Taped up the end so it couldn't find it's way to shorting something else and shoved it behind the module. Problem solved!

X2.. Just traded in my '08 for a 12 and kind of worried I'm getting a less capable truck. Would be great to know if this works as well and the same way for the new model. Mod looks easy, but never took out the glove box before.

First post, and great thread. Thanks to all those that have tried it first. I do lots of ice fishing and like the grip of all 4 when I can. I run narrower winter tires with spyder spacers and chain all 4 up. Hopefully the new truck works as well.

Unless you traded an '08 Off Road for a '12 Sport, if a Sport or other model for a Sport or other model, you lost nothing...

If you wanted the most capable truck, then your 2012 should have been a 4WD Off Road TRD.

Off Road TRDs have the extra traction systems from the factory (Rear Locker and A-TRAC)... Sport TRDs have no more traction systems than base or SR-5 Tacomas... but, they do have that scoop on the hood and color matched trim that means so much to some! Thank Goodness for the mod to help them have some more traction in low range.. TRAC in 4WD & AUTO LSD in 2WD do work!!

Thanks for the reply David. I traded (pick up the 2012 tomorrow), a sport for sport. I was worried the brake actuated LSD would not compare to the mechanical I got used to in the '08. I was all set to cut the wires on a brand new truck until I saw a post saying it may have changed for '12. Just checking if the one post was correct - that there are now 3 wires. I'll give it a try and report back. I have not test driven the new trac system in any snow but have a good understanding of how the system works from checking your previous threads. Thanks!

I hope someone chimes in that has done this on a 2012. I don't have the balls to just start cutting wires.

From the photo's I have looked at on here of people doing this on older models the wires look a little different on the 2012.

So has anyone actually done this on the 2012 models yet?
I just got a 2012 DC LB 4X4 SR5, and I am looking to do this mod. I am hoping someone can offer up the info here.

Ok, so I did this today, and it seems to work. I pulled the connector out of the plug (2nd yellow wire from top), and covered it so it wont short on anything.
I put the truck in 4H... all good ( I heard a click coming from behind the glove box). Put it in 4L the right way (I heard an actuator engage down under the truck) and the 4LO light blinks on the dash, no buzzer. Putting the truck in 4L the wrong way (any gear other than Neutral), and both a blinking 4LO light and buzzer sound.
So I think I did this right. Seems to be like the earlier models in that the 4LO dash light blinks.
I will splice in a switch later on when I add my off-road/ fog lights, for when I take it to the dealer, it will function as the factory intended.
So yes, 2012 4x4's, it is still the 2nd wire down on the top plug.... yellow wire with a thin black tracer.
