    The 60k, 90k, 120k mile service chart for 2005+ Tacoma's (at www.smg.toyotapartsandservice.com

    - valve clearance inspection required except for 2TR-FE motor (not required!?)

Can any tech gurus confirm and say why. I thought the 2.7L was a DOHC shim under bucket that requires the clearance checkups.

I don't have a Tacoma, but doing research. This would be really cool as valve clearance inspections / adjustments are pricey (And I'll bet most shops and owners skip right over them).

So, the 4L V6 does call for valve clearance inspections at 60k, 120k ...

more pricey than just extra initial cost and fuel burn!

    Hi Phantom,

I have an '88 Toyota Pickup 4WD, 4 cyl, 5spd, xtra cab, with larger wheels/tires (came that way). Main complaints are -
    * tired of shifting (I get that fix on my motorcycle)

    * Certifiably underpowered (this thing can't do over 55 mph up a decent freeway grade, no passengers, no cargo), it's just flat out underpowered.

I drive mostly in the suburbs, paved roads, sometimes tote a dirt bike, street bike, bicycle, so ...

a 4 cylinder, automatic, 2WD should fit the bill just fine.

I think I'm ok with the 5 lug, 15in. wheels/ 215/70-15 tires, but wow they appear a little small on the Gen 2 Taco automatic 4 cyl, Access.

I see you can get the 16 in 245 tires on the 4 cyl access cab, but only on the manual transmission ... ah darn.

any rate, a Toyota tech confirmed the 2.7L 2TR-FE motor has hydraulic lifters, so no expensive valve clearance checks needed. Seems a good thing.

The new Tacoma's have 59 more horsepower then that old '88 4 cylinder had. Between that and having the proper sized tires (I should duck at this point) you'll probably be more than satisfied with the performance of the 2.7/auto. Happy shopping!
