i do mechanical seals for refineries for a living...you always should replace o-rings...!! may sound like a freak, but a viton oring is cheap and im a firm believer of doing stuff right the first time...

Here are the part numbers for the parts I bought. The seals were cheaper online, but once the shipping was included it kind of nulled the savings. Obviously, you can buy them where ever you want.

*This is the part no for the paper gasket. The one I received doesn't appear to have the same bolt pattern as the spare third that I have. Since I haven't pulled my stock third yet I'm not sure if the gasket is correct or not. The gasket is not essential as permatex or FIPG can be used instead.


Update:
After trying to use the paper gasket I found that it is the correct part number for the 8.4" diff. However I found it to be a little difficult to use and ended up tearing it when I was trying to put it on the studs. I just used permatex black instead.

so i know im a little late but im trying to fish in all the info i can before i atempt it. but i know you guys already went over the difficulty but could you do it one more time for me...? im 16 and pretty good with my hands( haha) and my buddy and i put a 5 in lift on his truck. how does it compare to lifting a taco?

p.s im haveing a professional put in the new 4.56 or 4.88 gears( beyond my skills)

I thought it was pretty simple. I was 16 when I did my 3 inch. The hardest part was the new upper a arms and that wasn't even that bad. Just make sure you have an extra set of hands. What lift are you planning on doing? I've done everylift out there for the Tacoma since all my buds have them. And as far as gears go just call up east coast gear supply. They specialize in Toyota 3rd member. Basically you call tell them what you want and they ship out the new 3rd member to you then you swap it yourself which is simple. Then ship your old 3rd member back to them in the same box. They even send shipping tags so you get their deal on shipping. As far as swapping the thirdmember all you do is undo all the brake line clips that are on the outside of the axle. Then unbolt the 4 bolts on each side of the axle pull the axles out along with the brake drum about 6 inches. then unbolt the third member put the new 3rd member in and push axles back in and your done. Took me 45 minutes doing it lazily the second time I did it. Let me know on which lift it is so I can save you some time on the install cuz I know the instructions can be confusing at times.

Might want to support your rear axles somehow so they don't rest on the axle seals.

oh sorry i was confussing. i allready have a lift on my taco( 6" trailmaster and 3" body) i was just saying that my buddy and i just did his truck.

anyways so if i bought a new 3 rd member ( rear and front) what am i looking at in terms of money. and what do i save if i send my old 3rd members back to them. and is it cheaper just to keep the old thirds and have new rings and pinnions put in?

I was right under a grand on my third member but I also put the Detroit truetrac in it. I think it's about 700 for just gears but you might as well get everything done now cuz you will save on labor and gear kit for an install on a locker or positrac.

Find the fsm for the first gens. Just realize that some steps aren't necessary because they tell you how to take the thing apart down to single parts. Check out the 2nd gen one I attached to get an idea of what's involved.

Call east coast gear supply on Monday and ask them about the front. I can't imagine it being any harder than the rear. Just a bit harder to reach is all.

ya that diagram was pretty complicated but i hate reading. but i have a clinton book so i think ill be good. unless someone else has some more info which would be great!
