I am sure this has happened to everyone your truck makes a funny noise until the mechanic gets in it, then it purrs like a kitten. being able to recreate the noise is the key to getting it fixed.

Probably the biggest thing that will help, is finding our what is NOT causing the noise. Put on your CSI hat, get the answers to these questions.

    1. Does the noise occur only while moving, or also when stopped?
    2. Does the noise also have a vibration you feel in the seat or steering wheel?
    3. Noise while braking? (suspension, steering, brake component)
    4. Noise while accelerating? (shocks, exhaust mount, motor mount)
    5. Noise when changing gears? (U-joints)
    6. Noise from accessories (AC, radio, fan)
    7. Does noise change when accelerating? (engine bearing, PS pump, AC bearing)
    8. Does noise change while turning? (wheel bearing, CV joints)
    9. Does noise change with the weather? (accessory belt, drum brakes)
    10. New noise after coming off a trail? (rock or stick in suspension, brakes)
    11. Noise with engine performance drop? (vacuum leak, cat plugged, overheating)

Drive at different speeds, on different road types, with all accessories off. Introduce variables one at a time, pay attention! get a buddy to help. I know finding an intermittant noise can be frustrating.
