Q about buying a Tacoma - what to avoid

I am going to purchase a 2005-2007 Tacoma DoubleCab in the next few weeks. I want to know if there are any options to look for or avoid in a used Tacoma. Specifically, did/do they offer different gear ratios in the rear end that might limit capabilities or future mods.

This truck will replace a 2003 Wrangler. I purchased this wrangler with little knowledge of the options and packages available. I ended up with the pathetic 3.07 gears in the weak Dana 35. I want to avoid the same mistake. I will use this truck to haul small furniture items for work and occasionally fill deer feeders and haul firewood - I will not use it for any type of off-roading other than gravel/dirt roads.

I realize this is not a technical question per se...but, I did not see a specific category for this type of Q.

Thank you

Also, do some models come with a limited slip or locker in the rear diff? If so, what names indicate that, SR5, Sport or somesuch?

SR5 is just a trim/bling package. It doesn't have anything to do with the suspension.

A Pre-Runner is a 2wd tacoma that has the 4x4 suspension. It can come with a E-locker or the LSD (refer to the link). The 4x4 sport comes with the LSD, while the OffRoad package has the E-locker.

TRD Sports have limited slip, TRD Off-Roads have locking rear diffs. I usually try to buy something that's as close to stock as possible. I'd rather know who did the modifications on the truck.

My '08 is a SR-5 no TRD and has a limited slip (the mechanical one). It was a option. I also have the factory tow package and alloy wheels, but with shitty dunlop at20 245 tires.

If you have a VIN, could you tell what equipment it has?
