Averaging about 25 right now, mostly city driving. 2.4 L. Hardly ever have the cash for a complete fuel-up, and gas gauge doesn't work, so I just throw in a couple bucks here and there when I can.

If you are not completely filling the tank and your gauge is not working, you have no way of even ballparking your MPG.

I really doubt that you're getting 25 on a '96, though it's possible under some conditions. My '94 got 18.

Earlier this year before the heat set in, I was regularly getting a little over 25 on my '96 2.4.

95.5, V6, 5-speed, 31/10.5/15's, 210k miles
Redline Oil/Fluid in everything

I got 24mpg on it last tank
The highest I had got before was 23mpg
Both times were nearly all what I guess you'd consider "highway" at 55mph or under, AKA 2.5k rpm or less

The highest I've ever got on my actual highway at 70mph, AKA 3k rpm, was 21.7mpg

The 24mpg was Chevron 92 E10
The 23mpg was a half-tank of Conoco 91 E0 and half-tank of no-name 89 E-10

Bingo.

My '94 normally got 18, but pulled better than 25 on a run from Vegas to Phoenix rolling a solid 55 all the way.

Back down to 18 from Phoenix to Tuscon.

It is.

I normally run mid-23 to mid-25.

This is the result of 50 miles out shopping with the wife today. This included about 10 miles of freeway:

Yeah that's what I was hoping/thinking. I guess I was just looking for some reassurance. It sucks. It's hard to try and keep my rpms low when you feel like going fast or running late. I kinda want an ultragauge just so I can see my mpg. Does it show instant mpg or just average?

It shows instant, but it's really useless... constantly swings from 5 to 200... it's little more than a distraction.

What I use is what you see on the right side... "SRT" is the numbers from the last time the engine was restarted, so even though my average might only be 20 when I get to work Monday, my SRT will be 25 or even 26.
I reset TRP every time I refuel.

For comparison, this is from a little over a year ago.

The screen on the left is how it looked when I got to work one morning.
Screen on the right is how it looked when I got home that evening.

The picture was taken on 6/12/12. I ended up at 25.3 on that tank when I gassed up 2 days later.

2013 dbl cab baja edition with 4k miles on it no mods. Mostly hwy getting 17.6-18.1 mpg. Just was in my bro in laws and watched him fill up, 2010 dbl cab long bed 2wd bone stock and his average was 20.7 mpg city highway combo driving. I was impressed he gets that on average.

2012 DC Base Auto with just over 12,500. I was getting around 25mpg the first 8,000 miles and have been able to get 27 since if I don't push it too hard.

Most of my driving is hwy 50-60 mph.

In the mid-late 70s during one of the surges in gas prices (to a whopping $0.75/gallon!) Honda ran a magazine ad campaign for the Civic CVCC that said "It can run a mile cheaper than you can"
The first paragraph then described how much fuel cost was to drive the Civic a mile, and then compared that to the number of calories burned by running a mile and how much of the cost of a cheeseburger went into that.

Today, engines are more efficient, and fuel has not kept pace with inflation, while fast food has perhaps exceeded average inflation.

It may not be 25, but the little bit of info I can compile is indicating it's somewhere around there. It's also a fresh rebuild, (less than 3000 miles on it right now) so maybe that'll give it better mileage than most of the other 96's out there. When you were getting 18 in that 94, was that when it was new, or was it already nice and worn in?
