I have a 2001 Tacoma that recently could not pass the Smog Test. Came back with a message "fail". I recently purchase an OBD II scanner and hooked it up to the DLC and got a "connection error" message. What are the possible causes. I'm hoping that it's the DLC and not the ECM. The scanner is working fine as I plugged it into my other car. Also, can I connect the scanner directly to the ECM, bypassing the DLC for isolating t/shooting purposes. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
