Hmm, fuel heater, oil cooler?

So, heres my idea (guess I've been around planes too long).

Heat fuel going to the engine by a fuel oil heat exchanger setup. Fuel enters the vessel and circulates via a copper coil, which is then surrounded by hot engine oil . This would be installed in parallel with the oil system so that a bypass route would be able to control hot oil flow into the system to adjust the temperature.

My reasoning, warming up the fuel would allow it to burn better, and more completely, while at the same time adding capacity to the engine oil and additional cooling.

Idea #2, substitute oil for engine coolant.

Is this needed? Probably not. Just an idea I'm stealing from my plane.

So, just putting it out there, I'm bored, trying to spur ideas.

Don't mind me..bored, the next step is for me to find something to "Fix".

 

I can't think of any reason thermodynamically why you would want to heat fuel. The only reason I've seen for heating fuel is to keep it flowing, for example #6 fuel oil used in boilers has to be heated or it won't flow. What's the reason fuel is heated in aircraft? I would imagine it's for the same reason due to extreme cold at high altitudes. Can you tell I'm an engineer

 

well if we were talking diesel then you would be on to something that was invented 10 yrs ago

 

Haha guys cut me a little slack . It is used in our aircraft because ice can form in our fuel, which - if allowed to flow to the engines could obstruct a line and cause an engine to run too lean, which would create bad problems (jet engines don't like to run out of fuel - flame out = bad)

I'm just a guy who sometimes can't help himself, and will type a random idea to spark other ideas. There is a reason why cars don't come equipped with the set up I described.

Now, if this was a diesel forum, and people were running veg oil, then this would be of more use.

Damn engineers! Always using their logic.
