Classic...
Guess we will all have to deal with it.

I do notice if I shift into second on our Tacoma at 3000 rpm it is much smoother.

With our 6-Speed manual trannied FJ Cruiser the shifting is much smoother and I tend to shift gears around 2100 rpms with no problems.
I have kind of attributed it to the fact that 4 cylinders tend to like to be reved higher.
Still not happy with the "sticky" shifting in the 5 speed Tacoma though.

I assume the 6 speed Tacomas don't have this issue?

Actually, I have a V6 6 spd, and it does the same kind of thing. It is not a very smooth shift from 1st to 2nd.. but everything else is very smooth. It's not something that bothers me, but I did notice it. My last truck did it too.. it was a 4 cyl 5 spd.

They put in a new pedal arm assembly. It was supposed to allow for more travel of the pedal to more fully disengage the clutch. It really feels the same to me. The money I spent on a new truck I guess I was just expecting everything to work perfectly. I do like the truck, just not 100% satisfied. Lately I have been disappointed with products and services or maybe I'm just getting old and grumpy. I am considering taking it to a tranny shop and seeing what they say.

The older you get the grumpier you are allowed to be because you have more experience with how things should be done right.

I took my truck in to the dealership to have them check the rough 2nd gear shifting. They mentioned that it is working fine, but also added that I need to be sure to push the clutch all the way down before shifting. Well, I haven’t had to do that for other gears, but I will from now on. I tried it out, and it does work somewhat better. To me it is still not as smooth as shifting the other gears, but there is a marked improvement.

I have driven a manual transmission for years - but with my new 07 (6 spd)Tacoma I have a couple weird things:
1) When I take my foot off the gas peddle there is a delay in response of the RPM's dropping - as a result - i have to shift a lot slower or the engine revs when I push in the clutch - ie I can take my foot completely off the gase and then immediately push in the clutch and the engine will rev higher.
2) My gears don't grind, but between 1/2 and 2/3 I get a little bit of 'lurchiness' unless I am super careful.

Anybody else experience this?

I don't have the Accelerate response issue, but the shifting issue has me curious. I have noticed that the syncro gear takes a few extra seconds around the 2nd gear area, but thats about it. Can you describe the 'Lurchiness' a little more?

I just bought a 2007 4.0L 6 speed. I noticed the grinding of the gears right away and drove right back to the lot. I had the service mechanic drive it. He told me that the grinding noise was just a problem with the tranny and that it happens to all Toyota 6 speeds. He said it is under warrenty and I should not worry about it. It is not a problem if I shift from 2nd to 1st under 20km (from Canada)but grinds if i shift above that.Now that I hear you guys talk about it I am pissed. What does TSB stand for? I want this fixed.

I don't get the grinding unless I shift into first at anything faster than a super slow speed (didn't notice the MPH). In other cars I am used to being able to finesse the clutch pedal and accelerator as the clutch is engaging to get a really smooth shift- however often I get a lurchiness from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. It seems to happen worse if I drive super mellow. The tranny just doesn't seem to respond very often to my attempts to 'finesse' it. My smoothest shifts seem to be at higher RPM's - maybe around 3k. I need to play around with it some more to get more specific data - I only have 760 miles on it and its been in the shop getting Leather and LoJack the last week. I will update in another day or so in case anyone is interested. BTW - not really complaining - I love the truck - just makes me feel like I suddenly unlearned how to drive a manual transmission.

That doesn’t sound right to me. The part about the problem is still under warranty seems fishy to me. I think “TSB” stands for Technical Service Bulletin. Try talking to the Service Manager and see what they say. Also, have him drive it with you in the truck.

I have been trying different rpm shifting attempting to improve my gas mileage. See what happens when you shift each gear before you reach 2500 rpms. I think you will notice changing gears may be a little better even though it will make you feel like your driving like a granny. Be sure to push the clutch all the way down when shifting and again notice the difference. This is especially truck when shifting from 1st to 2nd.

I went to the dealership again, I had the mechanic take the truck for a drive with me in it. He acknowleged the problem, but sait that the new 6 speed tranny for the tacoma has a weird syncro. He said there is no way toyota will replace it because, although it makes a grinding noise, it still works. He said it sucks, but that is the way it is. He said he has never heard of any further problems down the road, but I should try to sift from 2nd to 1st under 20kph. At least they admitted they made a mistake, too bad it would probably take a new tranny to fix.

I have a '05 V6 6-speed....and have thought the shifting, lurching and general roughness was obviously not 'normal in any standard transmission. I have noticed that rpm's and shift-points do make a difference tho...as for the engine over-revving, that is a Toyota trademark since the 70's. Not sure why they all do it...even my '74 Hilux did it...but they do. As for the TSB on the different clutch pedal arm, I'm curious? I had my clutch master cylinder leak last winter, due to the extream cold( so I assume?) and not sure if they installed newer type pedal.

Over-all....Tacoma has been great....but I had probably the very first one to have the paint-chipping issue....less than two days after I bought it....and mine was one of a dozen to be purchased on the very first day they were available in Canada. I had little or no problem getting it re-painted under warranty. It took them over a year to agree to it tho. I also have the 'weak' tailgate problem too....just dealing with my dealership today, actually, on the TSB regarding that. My dealer has been awesome, so I mention the problem, and leave it in their hands and they get things right for me, even if it takes awhile. They never give me the run-around. Many times, the higher-up's at 'warranty central' balk, but as my truck is often one of the first to show signs of future problems, being it was of the very first batch made, my problems are more of the harbringer of things and trends on all. Tailgate, paint..ect. After lease runs out next year....I'll be getting a new one, same colour, same model. I love this truck.

Same here.

I have noticed that the shifting was a bit odd. I felt like I had to re-learn how to drive stick. But I have tried different shift points and tried being more perfect w/ clutch/stick manuvers and timing; it has helped a lot. I think the engine is just made to shift w/ a high rev. you can do it w/ low rpm and rev but you have to be very smooth w/ the clutch all the way down and gas given at the perfect time.

Just my 2 cents from the guy w/ a 2.7ltr manual transmission.

There's a couple different things that will solve that 2nd gear grinding issue.

1. You can swap out the gear oil for Redline MT-90
2. You can go to the local dealer and purchase the Limited-Slip Differential additive and put that in with the gear oil.

There are two clutch TSB's... one is for the pedal making a squeaking noise when in motion and the other is for a poor feeling of the clutch pedal engagement, but neither of these will solve the grind to 2nd gear.
