First Repair @ 145,600 miles

My truck had a strange vibration at low speed. I emailed Chris4x4 & he mentioned Universal joint as a possible issue. Sure enough he was right as usual.
The Universal joint connecting the drive shaft to the transmission had failed. One of the pins was coming apart. The guys at Goodyear showed me the failing part. I'm glad I didn't ignore it. $200 to have it repaired. Stealer probably would have charged $500. Not too shabby for 145,600 miles & this was my first repair.

 

Glad you got it squared away. This is good news for people starting to doubt the reliability of the second gens.

 

Still a damn good truck. Paid for, only costs me gas & maint.

 

How often did you grease the parts in question?

 

There aren't any zerk fittings on the U joint on the 2nd gen trucks. I was told they don't get greased.

 

maybe I am missing something here but on my 07 there are several on the whole driveline.

I have to be missing something here 145k -- what year, when did the 2nd gens start being sold?

 

2nd Gen Prerunners have no grease zerks on the driveshaft.

2nd Gen 4x4s have 5, 3 on the rear shaft, 2 on the front.

Yes I am pleased with my truck. 146k as of today, & that is the only repair.

 

That's just Toyota for you. My Matrix has 170k and the only repair was a catalytic converter that went bad in the first two months and Toyota had a TSB for it.

Since then (it's an '03, bought late '02), I haven't had to repair anything, NOTHING, just regular maintenance. And it has been thoroughly used, possibly occasionally abused, depending upon your definition. Still buzzing around in it as my daily driver, and plan to keep it til it finally gives up the ghost....300k on the original engine/transmission is my goal.
