Best Mod for fuel increase

Need input for an xtra couple miles to gallon. Have already went w/ a very small hwy tire. Is there anything else I can do thats guaranteed to increase fuel mileage on tacomas. GEN. 1 or 2. (chip/exhaust/air intake/??)

Fuel is going to $5. It's just a matter of time..

I noticed a difference when I switched from 87 octane to 93 octane. roughly 2-3mpg better with my 20's and 37's. so if you are stock you should see a bigger improvement i would believe.

Jump in on the AFE Pro Dry filter group buy! I have one in my V6, and picked up 2-3mpg. Was getting around 17-18 before, and I've been getting 19-20.5 for the last month it's been in.


Also, for $50 it'll pay for itself in the time it would take you to replace the stock one 3 times even if you don't get better mpg!

You do have a point. But so do I. Say I put 20 gallons in. Say 87 is $3.90/gal and 93 is $4.10/gal. (which is the prices around here for now) 20 gal of 87 @ $3.90/gal = $78.00. 20 gal of 93 @ $4.10/gal = $82.00. I used to get average 12mpg on 87. 20 gallons X 12mpg=240 miles to tank. Now im getting average 14.5mpg so 20 X 14.5=290 miles to tank. Now the extra $4.00 that I spent in one week I can go another 50 miles. To me its worth it. To some people it may not be. I drive 18 miles round trip from home to work and back home. 3 sometimes 4 times a week. If all I did is go back and fourth to work I could do it for lets be safe and say 15 days of just going to work and coming home. Thats 2 weeks and a day of $82.00. Lets just say 2 weeks even. So devide that by 2. $82.00/2=$41.00/wk. In my book, im not necessarily saving money, but an getting better mpg.

Just courious, Did you do the test after the engine was fully broken in? After 15,000 miles? My Tacoma, and the one before that, gained 2-3 mpg after I rolled past 15,000 to 19,000 miles on the odo.

What about this for better MPG:

What if I could direct air more directly into the breather box instead of air coming from the fender well?

I had thought about making the fake, triangular grill next to the turn signals into a working grill (with holes) and using that to direct air into a tube and into the airbox.

A friend and I did this to his Tacoma. We took out his passenger side marker light. We used it as a mold for a fiberglass intake scoop. Ran the air right into the airbox. On the dyno, we saw no gains until we held a leaf blower up and aimed it and the new scoop. We stood about 5ft. away and saw an increase of 6 h.p.. We figured you wouldnt see any real gain until 60 m.p.h. or so. The afn at the shop couldnt blow air that fast. Bottom line is, it worked. Was it worth it? I wouldnt do it to mine, but he liked it, so its one of those things that you may have to try.
Oh, the small fake grill next to the turn signal is too small. You would want to use a larger intake scoop.

Tonneau cover....

Slightly higher air pressure in tires....

Take some weight off your right foot....

(I have a Scangauge also, but that doesn't affect MPG. It just allows you to see the results)

I've removed my secondary air filter when I first bought the truck
I use synthetic oil
and I will be getting an AFE dryflow hopefully soon (group buy).

wondering if anyone has tried using denso iridium plugs gapped 20% over for any mileage increase. i have used bosh platinums this way for years in several vehicles without any ignition problems or any problems to speak of. just not sure in my new Tacoma.

An update since I was quoted.

My last 3 tanks average is now 27.91

27.516 MPG
28.114 MPG
28.066 MPG.

My fuel log




The 4 cylinder Tacoma has iridium plugs from the factory so I won't be looking into trying anything new there for another 80,000 miles.

hey thx Roland, just something that has worked in a 96 Honda Civic, just not sure if i want to mess with my new warranty or not for a couple miles per gallon extra. the gap increase would go from .44 to .53 on this particular truck. i may have to try it for a tank or two of gas just to see if i get any problems or improved mileage.
