ABS fuse

Ok my RR diff. lock doesn't engage. The light just keeps flashing. I check my taco and saw i was missing a ABS fuse. I was reading in the manual that the ABS are turned off when you use the RR diff. lock. Is the reason my RR diff. lock not working because i am missing the ABS fuse or what?

 

You have a 2001, right?

Do you even have ABS? ABS was an option - not a standard feature - in 2001.

 

Yeah i do have a 2001. Im not quite sure. I just checked the fuse box and saw there was no fuse for the ABS slot.

 

look under the hood and you will be able to tell. If you do have ABS, there will be a valve body and controller that operates the ABS. Or you just step on the brakes and see if you skid or not.

 

I'm pretty sure that's not your problem. Even if you had ABS and the fuse was missing, the ABS system would be 'dead' (just what is supposed to happen when the locker is engaged). Besides, the ABS fuse is not involved in the locker circuit at all.

The flashing light means one of 2 things ...

The diff lock ECU 'thinks' the switch is being engaged under conditions when it shouldn't be (e.g., speed higher than 5 mph) or the differential lock detection switch disengages or never engaged in the first place (in effect signaling no lock achieved).

 

i have an 02 taco and the diff lock indicator light only flases too. how would you be able to tell which one of these two possibilities is actually causing the problem and fix it. I hve come to a complete stop put the truck in 4lo and it still flashes. Very curious

You did know that the rear locker only works while you are in 4WD LOW RANGE, on a 4WD Tacoma... right?

The light will just blink if you push it in H2 or H4...

 

Sometimes it goes in on the first try and other times I have to repeat the process up to 5-6 times before the light stops blinking. It is my third Tacoma with a locker, so I have done it many times.

In L4, tires straight, brakes off (so nothing prevents the locking gear from meshing)... Sometimes, I will put it into Drive and slowly move to pop it in.

Another reason I enjoy A-TRAC over lockers... goes in every time never a problem.

 

yeah i knew that it would only engage in 4 LO but for some reason i tried it out again this weekend and it seemed to be working fine...

the light stop flashing after i pulled up three feet or so

On the first generation Tacos the grey wire mod seems like an easy way to get rear locker action in H2 and H4... On the 2nd gen. Tacos it is quite a bit more complicated, requiring a relay... I have not done it... I only needed the locker when I was already in low range crawling up rocky grades.
