WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT SWAPPING 2ND GEN BENCH SEAT FOR BUCKETS;
I recently swapped my 2011 Bench seat W Airbags for 2007 OEM NON-AIRBAG buckets. After searching for 12+ hrs, i found only scattered information about an oem tacoma Bench>Buckets swap.i created this mega thread to put all the information in one place . Feel free to share any information about bench>bucket swap here!!

All Eight mounting holes are already under the carpet with threaded nuts. The two rear holes closest to the center tunnel have a round black sticker over the holes, just peel away the stickers! You cannot use the bench seat rails on the Bucket seats, TOTALLY different shape Rail size and design. The passenger side Bucket seat CANNOT be moved all the way forward with the bench console (hits the bench center console). The drivers side bucket has no issues moving all the way forward or backward with the bench console. Note; If the OEM bucket seat rails wont line up with the floor holes don't panic, Squeeze the seat adjustment lever and gently push/pull seats till they line up. The center seat belt can be unbolted from the floor and removed, there will be no need for it now. The Bucket seats Female receptacle will NOT accept the seat belts for the bench seat (too wide).There is (3) options to overcome this;
1) Reuse bench seat female buckles and retain original mounting point on floor.
2) Get (2) new bucket seat belt assembly's and use the bucket female receptacles.
3) Grind a tiny bit off the width of the bench buckle's to fit into the bucket female receptacles .
Most of the Airbag system wiring components will not interchange. The passenger floor harness plugs are totally incompatible, The seat rail sensors are different, different computer occupant detection systems, etc. You basically have (4) options with the airbag system here;
1) Disable the entire airbag system (NOT ENDORSED).
2) Swap bench components into bucket seat/Bypass Airbag safety features
3) Swap in OEM non-airbag buckets and use OEM bucket electronics
4) Utilize newer OEM buckets with seat airbags and retain 100% usage
Disabling Airbag System;
Though not recommended, some may choose to disable the entire airbag system. Some state inspections may fail your vehicle for non-functioning airbags so check those local laws first! The only benefit here is Cost.
Swapping bench components into bucket seat;

You WILL lose the seat airbags and need to fool the system with some resistors so you wont trip the airbag light;http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd...0-reg-cab.html
The magnetic rail sensors from the bench seat will not attach to the bucket rails (different design). This shuts off the airbag if the seat is too close. Some have zip-tied metal to fool the sensor, this defeats its intended purpose.(safety concern). Lastly, you will need to transplant the weight sensor into the passenger bucket. Note; DO NOT CUT WEIGHT BLADDER HOSE, you will ruin the bladder and it leakes out an oily mess! Do not try to rip it out, Remove very carefully by disassembling bench seat cushion first.
Swap in OEM non-airbag buckets and use OEM bucket electronics;
The early 2nd gen tacoma (05-08) came factory with the front Drivers/passenger airbags only. If you decide to swap non-airbag equipped buckets into a late model tacoma, this option will delete seat/side curtain airbags and allow the front drivers/passenger airbags to function as an 05-08 tacoma. The benefit here is you have 100% OEM airbag functionality with no bypassing of seat rail sensors and no transplanting of any bench seat hardware. Using the correct bucket seat occupant detection system/airbag module/wiring harness(s) designed to work exclusively with the bucket seats. This option will cost a little more in parts(See part-2 Below for more info)
Utilize newer buckets with airbags and retain 100% usage;
I've never seen or heard of it being done as of yet however, it can be done if you swap in the correct airbag wiring harness(s)/Module. This option is the best in terms of preserving all the seat/side curtain airbags on a late model 2nd gen tacoma. This option is also the most expensive, as airbag equipped buckets are not cheap.
Many people want to swap out their center console with the seat swap but there is some compatibility issues that you should know... The 4.0L V6 automatic center trim is not compatible with the 2.7L Automatic transmission (different transmission placement) However, the Manual 6-speed center Trim will work with the 2.7L Manual transmission! All threaded bolt holes are already under the carpet. Note; If you swap in the bucket seat center console, You must use the bucket seat female receptacles. The bench receptacles will interfere with the movement of both seats and bind against the center console. Ask me how i know!! Removing the bench center console will reveal (2) notches in the carpet w painted metal. These are the bench console mounting points. The full length console is more narrow and doesn't utilize those mounting points. (Minor cosmetic issue).
Interior rear cab panel;
The regular cab bench seat equipped tacoma comes standard with a painted metal rear interior wall behind the seats (no carpet panel). You can swap in the interior rear carpet cab panel from a Reg cab with buckets or just leave it as is. If you leave it bare, expect to hear some road noise.

Is it a good idea to go the "Bypass" route and just transplant the bench hardware?
Bypassing means using incorrect parts not designed for the buckets. The bench Seat rail sensors have no way to mount on the bucket rails (different style and size) which means bypassing them to fool the system. The seat rail sensors report the seating position to the airbag module which decides to turn the airbags on or off . The danger in bypassing means the airbags are always "on" regardless of the seating position which poses a safety concern.
How much does a Bench>Buckets swap cost?
There is no specific dollar amount. New/Used parts can be a factor in cost. A used pair of bucket seats can typically range around $500. Additional mod equipment can jump the cost around $1000.
Is it street legal to mess with the airbag components?
Per the Nhtsa, it is NOT legal for any shop or business to modify,bypass or disable your airbag system. Depending on your home state, messing with the airbags MAY fail your vehicle inspection. Check your local state laws. Some states do not inspect the airbag system, some do.
Is it worth the effort?
Only you can decide that. Toyota obviously went through a lot of trouble to ensure that the the airbag/seat belt/occupant detection components will not be interchanged easily thus discouraging people from making the swap. However, It can and has been done by many people and with great success.
What airbag components are interchangeable from 2005-2011 ?
Most of the airbag components are not interchangeable. Bucket seats use a different computer occupant detection system,drivers/passenger seat floor harness, instrument cluster wire,and airbag module. The drivers/pass airbags are interchangeable from 2005-2011. The vehicle airbag sensors are also interchangeable. The drivers side floor harness 2 clips into both the buckets and bench however, this harness is not interchangeable and needs to be swapped. The passenger floor harness 1 cannot interchange between bench to buckets. (totally different plugs see pics below)

~Working OEM non-airbag buckets and bucket electronics
~Reverting 09-12 Tacoma Airbag System back to 05-08
NOTE; This mod requires a basic knowledge of electronics, reading schematic diagrams, soldering, and pin insertion/extraction.
In this section, im going to talk about reverting late 2nd Gen Tacoma Airbag System back to 05-08. Why would you want to?? To retain 100% OEM airbag functionality with no bypassing of seat rail sensors and no transplanting of any bench seat hardware. Im going to use the correct bucket seat occupant detection system/airbag module/wiring harness designed to work exclusively with the bucket seats. This applicaton covers; 07 OEM non-airbag buckets into a 2009+ reg cab 5-Lug w bench seat. This mod will allow drivers/passenger airbag to function as if it were a 2005-2008 tacoma. This mod will delete seat/side curtain airbags (not an option in 2005-2008). This write up also covers Bench to OEM non-airbag buckets for 05-08 Regcab 5-lug tacoma (minus a few compatibility issues). This write-up does not cover Airbag equipped buckets swap, although they can be swapped in and made to function with a different airbag module, its never been done or documented as of yet.

These OEM parts are vital to this mod. There are many different part numbers for the airbag ecu. Different cab configurations/seats/year's required different airbag modules. The part numbers listed cover the 2011 regular cab bucket swap only! These harness part numbers were sorced from a 2006 tacoma reg cab 2.7L, 4 spd Auto w buckets. The floor harness(s) have been listed as discontinued through all toyota parts suppliers. All that remains is new old stock and salvage. Bench and buckets require 2 different dash harness's, these run about $1,500.00 each. To save money , I installed the necessary wire's like factory and retained the bench dash harness.
1) OEM 2nd gen Tacoma non-airbag bucket seats
2) Passenger airbag plastic switch cover and on/off keyed switch with pigtail harness

Note; Disconnect battery negative terminal and wait 90 seconds before doing any work to airbag system. DO NOT attempt to work on airbag system with battery connected! You may set off the airbags in your face and you'll trip the dash airbag light requiring the airbag module to be reset. VERY,VERY important!! The compatibility issue's below only apply because i retained the bench dash harness. Even if you purchase the correct dash harness from an 05-08 tacoma, there is no guarantee all the plugs/wiring will match. If you don't mind blowing $1,500, buy the correct OEM dash harness otherwise, read on...
If you decide to retain the bench dash harness, there are a few unnecessary wires at airbag ecu connector A21 that can be disconnected/snipped and heat shrinked. These wire's should be heat shrinked to prevent a short.

Passenger airbag switch not pre-wired;
2011 base tacoma is NOT prewired for a passenger airbag on/off switch. Airbag ECU Plug A21 doesn't even have the metal pin socket in place for the switch wire, just an empty space. I cannibalized the old bench floor harness and extracted two pin sockets with wire from the yellow bench ecu plug. I then inserted the two pin sockets into Plug A21-11 and A21-12 running the wires up to the passenger airbag switch pigtail, just like factory !!. (See illustration below)
DIY Tutorial-Extracting Airbag harness pin sockets;
Using a precision flat blade screwdriver, gently pry up the white insert on the top of the airbag computer connector;
Insert a precision flat blade screwdriver into the large spring release T-slot on the face of the plug. Use the appropriate t-slot nearest your desired wire to be removed or inserted;
Pull out or push in wire from the rear of the airbag computer plug. Push white insert back down into the airbag computer plug when finished;
Airbag Cutoff switch wires loomed to correct factory pin location on airbag computer plug;
Floor harness-1 Red + Grey wires Not in dash loom
Insert the pin socket/wire into the factory connector 1l (pin5) on ECU-B Running the red wire just like factory to connector il1 (pin6) (See Schematic Below)
Insert grey wire into center airbag harness A21-13 to Pin-8 on the hazard warning assy harness. (PBEW). Although the schematic diagram shows the junction point being in connector il1, i ran the grey wire straight from Pin-8 on the H7 Hazard switch assy to airbag ecu plug A-21 Pin 13.
DIY Tutorial-Extracting Pins;
Gently pry up the white plastic insert on the top of the floor harness-1 plug. Then carefully remove the plastic insert completely;
Inside view of plug;
Gently wedge a precision flat blade screwdriver between the pin and plastic retainer inside of the plug. Apply slight pressure while pulling the wire out from the back of the plug;
Take the extracted pin/wire assy and relocate it to the correct plug location to mate with the dash plug. Replace the plastic insert;
Drivers side floor harness-2 roof plug wont fit into TPMS computer
The new drivers side floor harness-2 TPMS roof plug is too wide to fit into the roof TPMS computer. The wire colors remain unchanged. To overcome this, re-using your original roof harness, simply splice, solder, and use heat shrink tubing,connecting your old harness to the new one. This Mod will allow the Tire pressure computer to function normally.

No roof access to unclip/clip last floor harness-2 roof plug
There is an additional roof plug that disappears into a very small roof opening (as shown).
There is no access to unclip/clip the new harness plug in. To overcome this,re-using your original roof harness, simply splice,solder,and use heat shrink tubing, connecting your old harness to the new one. Its best to do both these at the same time. All wire colors remain unchanged and a direct match!

Note; the compatibility issue's listed below only apply to an 09+ Regcab 5 Lug, The 05-08's are not affected by these issues below.
No airbag ECU (TC terminal) to Drivers Junction Block#1 wire
In order for the center airbag ECU to communicate with the diagnostic OBD2 Data port, a tracer wire must be ran from Drivers kick panel Junction block #1. This junction block connects the Center airbag assy to the obd2 port. Junction block #1 is already pre-wired but a pin socket/wire needs to be inserted into pin 19 of connector DB with a wire going to Airbag ECU plug A21-15. (see pic)
No SRS combination meter to airbag ECU wire
The SRS warning light indicates if there is a problem with the Srs system. It is a non-critical component to the functionality of the SRS airbag system.
The Combination meter internal Printed circuit board SRS warning light circuit from 09-12 is different from the 05-08 tacoma.After attempting to reverse engineer the SRS circuit back to 05-08 i determined that, connecting a tracer from Ecu plug A21-14 to CM plug C9-33 does not work.Although CM pin C9-33 is present, it is not internally connected on the printed circuit board to the SRS light. There is (2) options to overcome this;
1) Do the black tape mod over the SRS warning light
2) Try to internally connect the SRS warning light to pin C9-33 via the printed circuit board
I chose option #1 (black tape mod). The combination meter is expensive, logs your odometer reading, and feeds many other circuits . I chose not to risk potentially damaging the combination meter printed circuit board.In the future, i may buy a secondary instrument cluster to experiment with.
Upon ignition, the occupant detection system goes through the normal diagnostic. When a passenger is in the seat, the seatbelt indicator glows and the passenger airbag indicator light indicates "On". I also tested the manual passenger airbag cutoff switch and it works as it should indicating "off" when switched off manually! This one-off mod has been a year in the making with months of research, time, money, and dedication. Why did i go through this much trouble to do this mod? Because it's never been done and i wanted to be the first! This was not an easy or cheap mod!

It's good info. When I switch seats, I will be going with Corbeau seats, so I will need to bypass the airbags. I'd like to keep the front airbags functional, if at all possible, so the writeup helps.
i was going to get Corbeau aftermarket buckets. does the bench look like you can remove then install the sensors to a new seat?

Thanks. I've got a 2.7L 4X2 auto. I bought a V6 full console from a wrecker ($100), and you're right, different placement. Do they even make a full-length for a 2.7 4X2?
