Anyone Getting better MPG's in the city-6 Speed Manual

I get better MPG's in the city with my 6 speed manual V6 (around 18-19) than I do on the highway (16-17). Anyone else experience this? Its probably because I keep my rpms really low in the city.

 

My guess is your rpms are higher on the highway causing more fuel burn. The 6th gear is a joke in these trucks and does not drop the rpm enough to be a true overdrive gear. If you drive over 65 it really plummets.

 

Yeah thats what I thought. Im not complaining at all since most of the driving I do is on the highway.

5th on the 4 cyl does this to me too, but it's for a reason. The 6 has the power to deal with a lower gearing so I'm not sure why it was made this way.

 

My six speed definitely got good mileage in town. It was as happy as a clam to be in 6th gear at 35 mph spinning 1200 rpm; on flat ground the calibrated ultragauge would read 30-35 inst mpg. The hardcore drop over 60 mph was a factor in my decision to sell it. I was annoyed with avoiding freeways.

The 4 cyl does ok in town but doesn't like to lug along like the 6 did. 5th gear is pretty much 40 mph on up only, but I suppose I can live with that, as 35mph 4th and 45 mph 5th are both in the neighborhood of 35-40 inst mpg.

 

I don't know if I would call my driving City, but I've been hitting 18.2 to 18.3 in my 2010 6 speed in mostly suburban driving.

 

Would having a larger diameter tire drop the rpms down low enough so your not running so high in 6th? Like running a 255/85/16?
