Recently swapped an r150f 5 speed into my 02 v6 4x4 tacoma. Truck came from the factory with a auto and a push button t-case. When I swapped in the manual trans I put in a manual j-shift case. To get the truck running I spliced the park safety switch. I ran the 4low switch to the side of the tcase and the 4wd position switch to the other side. (red blue wire in diagram). The 4wd light is stuck blinking on the dash. It won't turn off. And the front diff won't engage. Anybody have any ideas? Here are the wiring diagrams

The light is flashing because you retained the 4wd ecu and it doesn't know the position of the transfer case anymore.

You would have to do 2 things.

1 - lock the front ADD in for full time and get manual hubs OR
2 - Wire up a DPDT switch to engage and disengage the front ADD
and 3 - Wire the 4x4 switch to be bypassed outside the 4wd ECU by connecting the switch directly from the red/blue wire to the Green/White wire (same goes with the 4lo wire)

So does this mean the factory j shift trucks do not have the same 4x4 ecu? What engages the ADD on the factory j-shift trucks?

If you're going the (2) route, I suggest a momentary contact on-off-on switch, because the ADD's limiter switches don't directly control power to its motor, rather that function is controlled by the 4wd ECU. So you definitely don't want to leave power connected to the ADD's motor when it is already fully shifted.

My preference/suggestion would be option (1). Side benefit to it is a bit of fuel savings in the summer when the hubs are disconnected.

There are two possible ways to deal with a manual transfer case; first is a different 4wd ecu, the second is to equip them with some kind of *mechanical* device for disconnecting the wheels from the differential. Toyota used to equip some Tacoma's, I think up to '99? with mechanical disconnecting hubs. I *think* that they were similar to the Nissan hubs, where you had to back up a yard in 2wd to disconnect them. I've seen aftermarket hubs of the type where you'd have to get out and turn the end with a wrench to connect and disconnect them.

I believe that the Toyota mechanical hubs were *not* available simultaneously with ABS.

Although I have an 04... I'm doing this swap; dbl cab AT/ Push button to dbl cab 5 spd j -shift. I just started reviewing the ewd.

J-shift has a relay that feeds the ADD, 2/4 push button has a 4wd ECU that controls the ADD.
