Wow, lots of IT people here. We have several guys in our office that are exactly like you describe. They run circles around me when it comes to server configuration/ Active Directory / and high end programming, but when it comes to basic PC hardware they're clueless and seem pretty appreciative when I fix hardware problems for them :)

It's realtively easy if you've had plenty of experience. Ive done the new STARTA and it seems like its a step before A+.

When i did my A+ i got questions about the linux printer daemon?!?! WTF. Just remember, the A+ exam follows the K.I.S.S. principle when it comes to solving computer problems, and always think safety first.

I cant pull up my scores but i do remember getting a pretty high score. If you need further help, the examcram is a good book to use.

If you'd like start out with STRATA first

Yeh there are a bunch of free ones out there. Don't pay for them.

Also, don't pay full price for an exam either. You can get the vouchers at a discounted price at numerous places online.

I tried to get it when I first started college. The shit they ask, I still have yet to run into half of it. I failed software, but smoked hardware. I haven't tried since. Really no point.
