if you were to buy a laptop this fall, which would it be and why?

Im in the market for a new laptop but I've been out of the technology loop for a while. So i figuredwant id see whats on everyones wish list and maybe triangulate from there. Personally, I was leaning mac, and still am to an extent, but the prices of Pc laptops keeps bringing me back. Im not a gamer. Would need it for school work, video streaming, picture and video editing.

I've had Toshiba in the past with no complaints. I like the Series 7 Samsungs coming out they look great and are packing some good hardware. Granted I don't use my laptop as my primary computer I use the desktop I built for most things. My current Toshiba laptop is 4 years old and has never gave me issues.

 

Asus G73 or G74.

Super powerful, priced competitively. Asus is what I generally buy when I build my desktops, so far I've been really impressed with my G73. I put a Solid State Drive for my primary HD to run windows and applications/Programs off of and it's fast. Like boots up in 6 seconds and I'm web surfing fast.

No regrets.

buy a mac, you can't go wrong. my next laptop will most certainly be a mac

That was after a very quick search, but performance-wise it's mid-level, $680 and great reviews on Newegg (a very nitpicky technical audience).

I'll do more research if you like, but the more details the better. Is battery important, what about performance, etc?

What are you going to use this for primarily? Work, School, and/or Pleasure.

EDIT: What is your technical skill? For example do you know how Windows operates on more than a "click this button to open Internet Explorer" level? If your technical skill is nonexistent, go with a Mac - even though I find Macs to be very unrefined and overpriced, people swear they are easier to use.

You get what you pay for! Apple makes the best hardware, hands down. I know more then 1 person who bought a mac for the hardware and runs windows fulltime. the mac is going to be best for all your AV stuff to,

I bought a Macbook Pro for my wife a month ago, it is by far the best laptop I have ever owned or used.

Updating software or adding new programs/apps is a breeze.
It is ridiculously fast, 'boots up' in about 1 second from sleep mode, it was a breeze to set up on my wireless network and link with my print server, streams HD video from my Slingbox without a glitch (while surfing other internet sites), the little magnetic power plug is genius, if you own an iPhone/iPad/iPod it syncs flawlessly... I could go on.

Next laptop I buy will be another Mac.

 

Any kind of MacBook, but preferably a 15" MacBook Pro 2.2GHz quad-core
Intel Core i7. I currently have a 2006 Black MacBook which has been awesome, and still has its original battery at 91% health after 860 cycles

 

It would help to know other features you're interested in as well like screen size
and/or weight (any travel?). If it's something you're going to be carrying around alot, consider something lightweight and thin.

Lot's of people are happy with Macs. I'm sure you'd be happy with one as well. I'd never buy one myself (cost doesn't justify it's benefits in my mind).

Keep an eye on http://www.slickdeals.net. They're always posting up terrific deals. I bought a Dell Laptop for half it's listed price ($800 vs $1500) due to a deal that someone posted. Even at the full price, it was much less than the cost of comparable Apple hardware (specs wise).

 

i got a mac book pro like a year and half ago and its worked flawless since then. price was about $1100 but imo def worth it

 

please, please get a mac. those cheap pc laptops are exactly that... cheap! you'll go through 4 of them in the time you go through 1 mac.

 

mac, the resale is really good on mac's. I sell mine every two years and get the new model

 

This, and if you are doing anything with graphics and editing such the Mac will be so much better for you and your needs. I have 2, MacBook and iMac and love both of them. No complaints on either. Never had a single problem with either.

He's right, you'll have a Mac a lot longer without having to upgrade than a PC.

 

I disagree. I've had my laptop since 2007 and it's still going strong. No issues. $400 dollar laptop, maybe.

Well, thats good, and your right, its not all PC laptops. If you get a good PC then you should be alright. My girl just got a Lenovo with a lot of good stuff. But I'm partial to my Mac's. I really like my girl's Lenovo. My laptop was bought used off a Mac certified tech that put mine together (frankenstein type) and it has been awesome. But Evil is right, you can get good PC's as long as you take care of it and don't junk it up.
