Eh, I guess. You bought it tho, I'm sure you specced it for a 1tb drive..?

You can still buy smaller HDD's, but anymore why not have a terabyte... Hopefully drive prices start coming down, for a while there it was really cheap per gigabyte. Durn tsunami's.

Seems like overkill to me. Especially in a business setting where music/movies aren't being stored.

I'm not worried, I can reallocate the terabyte into a more useful application, my only point is that a large amount of local storage doesn't make a lot of sense.

Nope, but HP builds a lot of pre-built systems. You want top spec, everything comes top spec. You want middle spec, everything comes middle spec.

Much cheaper for them that way, believe it or not.

Anybody got any ideas for this......
I have a vm server. I can access websites, and what not on it. I can ping anything in the lan, but anytime I try to ping anything outside the lan, like google.com, it wont respond.
windows firewall is not turned on. Kaspersky antivirus is on it, but the only thing running is the file antivirus.

    What is the actual issue?

If you can access websites, it's probably not a DNS issue. Also, if you can access websites who cares if you can ping 'em? lol.

I guess to rule out DNS, try to ping 8.8.8.8.

Edit - FYI, if your office doesn't allow direct access to the 'net (IE thru a proxy server) then you won't be able to ping out to the internet. I cannot... but DNS resolves.

this. not many sites on the internet respond to ping. 8.8.8.8 and 4.2.2.2 will respond.

to test DNS you can go to a cmd prompt and type in nslookup www.google.com

it should look something like this:
Server: XXXXXXXX (blacked out my server name)
    Address: 10.25.x.x

    Non-authoritative answer:
    Name: www.l.google.com
    Addresses: 74.125.227.145
    74.125.227.146
    74.125.227.147
    74.125.227.148
    74.125.227.144
    Aliases: www.google.com

Were you ever able to ping or can you ping from other machines? If the company has a hardware firewall in there somewhere, your pings might be getting killed incoming or outgoing.

Just installed Ubuntu 11.10 on a test machine here... Pretty impressed with speed it has on this dinosaur of a PC... and I like the new dashboard deal... My only complaint so far is that it's just too Mac'ish for my taste... But I'll pry keep screwin with it, just for something fun to do.

I personally hate Unity with a passion. Gnome3 is kinda bleh. You can go back to 'Gnome Classic' if you want.... Did this for my parents, they've been much happier with that...

It's the Desktop Environments... They replaced Gnome2 with Unity instead of Gnome3. They basically merged the 'Netbook Remix' edition with the Desktop Edition.

Not a fan personally. I used to love KDE3.5, so go figure....
