    LOL!

No. He probably needs something that is native virtualization with a hypervisor, not a virtualization solution that requires another OS..

I have 0 experience with Solaris, so I didn't even bother chiming in...

I don't either, haha just my .02 on what I know about virtualization.

Kind of related, I have Windows 7 on my macbook, and It's funny to see people's reactions to me playing halo on an Apple Computer :D

I believe virtualbox will work only for the x86 version of Solaris. I don't think I can run a Sparc-based Solaris (version 8) on an x86 host with Virtualbox.

Here's a summary of what's going on. For our training simulator project, we've moved away from designated PCs to virtual machines for the platforms we develop towards. In the past, we would clone a targeted system with Norton Ghost (Flar for Solaris). Then when a new customer wanted the product, we'd try and unGhost. That worked as long as the architecture wasn't changed dramatically.

Of course as PCs moved on, the OSs we were stuck using became incompatible (Some are still using Windows 2000). We couldn't just update the OS to something newer because we wanted to match the look and feel of the system we were simulating toward and it may require source code or software segments we don't have access to.

So eventually, we went to virtual machines to prevent having to stock up on a bunch of PCs hoping they'll get used. Now we're not tied to any particular machine (e.g. a Dell Optiplex).

One of the remaining problems we have is with Solaris. We'd like to use the same model. Each of the systems we integrate toward has one or more Solaris machines. The way it's done now is we buy refurbished Sun servers that are much more expensive than they're worth and they tend to be unreliable. If I could virtualize a Sun server (V240), I wouldn't have to worry about buying old outdated hardware. It might even run faster on newer hardware even emulated. Though Oracle's VM servers can run x86 images, I would like to stay away from Oracle's servers because they're way too expensive for what we're using it for (starts around $13K) plus their upgrades are overpriced.

It's not surprising really since it's x86 hardware. The only reason a PC couldn't run Apple software is because Apple restricts it.

I actually heard something about someone getting the Darwin kernel to run on the HD2 :anonymous:

Should be interesting... That phone (and especially its developers...) never ceases to amaze.

But yea, when Macs ran their own procs that wasn't really feasible. Now they just run Intel's... so no prob running anything really. I know guys that triple boot.

have you tried any of the xen flavors in the open source market? the most popular one is Citrix, but i know there are some open source versions as well. I typically work in the x86 market so i don't know much about the sparc options.

I saw some at XDA-Developers were getting Windows XP to run as well. I'm kind of watching the whole VMWare android virtualization thing going on with LG. It may open up the ability to run virtual machines natively on the phone. I managed to get a full Debian Linux running on mine with Open Office, Gimp and a few other programs.

We use ESXi but I think Citrix has the same issue. They have options that will run on Solaris but not virtualize it for use on a PC (other than Solaris x86).

I'd suggest that both of you look into Linux Mint, it's sort of like a stripped-down stable version of whatever ubuntu has (well, it is based on it... so...). I'm running ver 11 on my torrent box and find it's been a lot more compatible.

They went to Gnome 3 with their new release, but I haven't looked at any of that myself.

I've heard of Mint, but never ran it personally.

Honestly, I prefer KDE... But ever since KDE4, it's been a rough ride. I miss 3.5...

My server runs Ubuntu 10.04, and that's my 'main' Linux box. My work requires Windoze, so it's easier to just run 7 on my lappy...
