i only buy acers after miserable experiences with both dells and gateway. my current acer is going on 6 years old and i keep it cool with a dual fan setup underneath the laptop. i think keeping laptops cool is very key to prolonging their life. but the op's situation seems a bit ridiculous. they should send you a brand new computer, and i would hold out for that at this point or get your money back from them.

my work laptop is a dell. only a year old and i've had to replace the keyboard twice. i am not impressed with their quality. i would never buy one again for my personal use.

macs are way overpriced in my opinion. unless you are a graphic artist or into making movies, etc. i can't see spending the coin on them. but to each their own.

 Give it a break already, bandwagon fools.

    x2, minus the color part...

Oh and like you Mac people are any better? 99.99999999999998% of Apple people spend $2,500 on mac shit JUST because it has a big shiny fruit on the case. Steve jobs could have gone through the grocery store writing a lower case "i" in front of all the product names, and there'd be a crowd of hipsters throwing $100 bills at the cashier to get the products. You are WORSE that the people wanting to pick the color on Dells. If you're spending money on a laptop and you don't care about tech specs, why not choose the one you can get a cool color in? I'm sure you didn't care about the color of your Tacoma when you bought it ... Give up on the Mac thing already. If he wanted one, he would have bought one already. I know they are nice, but they aren't my style. The only thing useful I've seen macs do is Photo and Video editing stuff, which they are good at, but that only makes up .001% of all the things in the computing world. And don't go calling me "old school" or anything because I stay with my PC, I'm a computer science major and I write software all day. I'd rather not have to use a VM on OSX just to write compiler code. And I'm not saying Windows is any better, I use Unix systems.

TL;DR: Give it up on the mac arguments, we all know you are special :D. If he wanted one, he would have bought one by now.

Oh, and OP, if you're still at UW and need computer help, shoot me a PM and I'll give you a hand. Don't pay for computer repairs locally. Very expensive.

My point is the price difference between most Dells and most Macs is great enough that comparing them is pointless. In fact a less powerful Mac than my 4+ year old Dell is still 3 times the cost... Oh and also not trying to jack your thread. Also if you get someone that sounds like the are outsourced I personally would push for a manager unless they are working with you with no issues.

Really dude? I have one Mac product and that is my computer. I don't think I have had more wrong statements written about me. Yes I did care about what color Tacoma I got, which is silver. I am in no way a Mac "hipster" if you will. I bought my computer because I knew it was going to last and so far I am right.

So because you bought a PC I can categorize you as "the kind of person that doesn't take the time to listen before he speaks"

    Give me a break.

Why don't you give all of us a break? I swear, ANY time someone starts a thread remotely about computers, there's always 4 or 5 people that HAVE to make sure everyone knows "You should have bought a Mac!". It's disgusting.

Computer lab I worked in, 100 brand new Macs. Issues every day. I'd rather have a PC for 1/3 the price.

IOS devices can't be beat though. My iPod touch survived an entire cycle in the washing machine while on.

I didn't say you, but everyone fuels the fire.

And I'm done, we've already fucked up OP's thread enough lol. I'll let you all enjoy your virus-free Macs. If only 99% of PC users new how to not get viruses  lol. Oh well. Gotta love end-users, right?

Lol I will and true that. Both systems have their pros and cons no doubt. Sometimes you get a system that will give you no problems and sometimes you don't. Wish it was more consistent :(

I've seen four Dell laptops go through my family in the past five years.. None of them lasted a month without the keyboard messing up, or the well-known "Dell restart" occurrences..

My dad has a Dell laptop from work.. just recently after a month of using it, the screen just shut off on him. He's gone through two of his work laptops in the past four years alone. (So really, I've seen six laptops go through the family)

I still use my Dell monitor from when I had my first desktop.. now that I think of it, my first desktop was a Dell. It didn't even last two years before it took a shit on me.

I've had no problems with my HP laptop for over a year now, and it's still running strong. Same with my Gateway desktop that I've had now for over two years.

I would suggest to stay away from Dell products.. forever!
