Best Home Sound System

I am looking at getting a sound system for the house and need something that is good for the money, under 250. I dont have a big budget so I was looking at the ones in wal-mart but dont want one that lasts a month and dies. I was also hoping to get a surround sound but thats also a money issue.

Better wait until you have more than $250 to budget.

Seriously

With sufficient thrust, pigs fly just fine.

Sound quality is very subjective. But for reals, you are not going to get any quality for $250. Your best bet is to read up in stereophile.com. Very expensive stuff, but they also have relatively cheap stuff that is still audiophile rated equipment. Read the pro reviews. Anything you can buy at Best Buy will be garbage.

OP - Anything Klipsch is going to be good but it is out of you price range. I'm thinking about starting small. 2 Klipsch bookshelf speakers, 1 Klipsch sub and a Pioneer or Onkyo receiver but that system right there is almost or over $1000 depending on what models I get.

You need to be more specific....

As a general comment, I would look for something that you can add to and build a surround sound system - meaning start with the receiver... I'd seriously look at buying a used one. So many people sell off very good receivers for cheap - either they're upgrading or with this economy selling them because they need $$. Something to think about...

For the $$, Onkyo generally has the best features per/$$ if you're insistent on buying new.
