my wife's desktop computer monitor died today. she uses it for school and needs some files that she has on there. my question is: is there some kind of cable that i can hook up to my laptop from her desktop that will enable me to transfer her files to my computer so that we dont have to run out and spend money on a new monitor tommarow?

Really no, you would have to download a program on your desktop but you cant get on there, unless someone has any other idea.

Do you have an LCD TV? most LCD tvs have a VGA input(monitor input) on them. I play movies on my laptop and watch them on my tv this way. That would be the option I could think of.

I would buy an external hard drive enclosure, mount the hard drive in the enclosure, and hook it up to your laptop via usb.

Maybe you can borrow a friends monitor then burn what you need to a cd. It's cheap and feasible. I've heard of using a monitor with a laptop but not a laptop as a monitor for another computer. Good luck.

If you had both on a home network, you can access it that way. The drive on the desktop would need to be shared tho.

don't do that. They mark everything up and then put a small discount on the items. I saw this happen a lot at compusa-the closeout price was higher than the normal price.

This is going to be your absolute cheapest route. HD enclosures start out around $10. Here's some on newegg: http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=2010090092&bop=And&Order=PRICE

Make sure that you know if it's IDE or SATA before buying one. SATA on top, and IDE on bottom:

You could also buy a new monitor. I think that somebody else said this, but to share data across a network, you would have to set that up pior to the monitor kicking the bucket.
