im installing a new harddrive and wanna just replace the windows i have. and install xp to my 500 gb hard drive

so you want to buy it

if someone lends it to you then both of you will have to call microsoft and explain things as it is for the installed system only ! as both of you would not be able to get microsoft critcal updates or update beyond sp-1
if you get a oem one it might not even have your drivers for your system

and if you get a copy cheap online it is a hacked version and at best will have sp-2 but no updates

you can still get a legal windows from small computer stores.

Yes sir, I work for Symantec... we have a few products for Imaging, Symantec Ghost.. which Im not that familiar with OR Altiris DS.. thats how I manage about 1000 Pcs

My Gf's dell just crashed and burned and it says to use the install disk to repair some damn file. I hate PC's and I really hate dells. Can anyone help me fix this with out a disk if I get you the problem info on the pc.

Off the top of my head, on startup it goes black screen with the problem on the screen. I haven't been able get around it yet but I run macs and I hate PC's.

you're gonna need a disc

most dells have a diagnostic mode that can be selected from start up that will test the hardware and make sure there are no errors, if the hardware is fine get yourself a linux live cd such as fedora. when you boot the cd you will be able to access all of the drive's documents even if the computer won't boot into windows and was password protected. then copy/backup the documents she wants to keep over to a usb drive or an external hard drive if it's formatted fat32 and after all of the files that she wants are copied to a new location just reinstall windows on the computer either through a system recovery or the recovery cds that came with the computer. any additional software that she installed on the machine will have to he reinstalled after this process.
