Our HVAC systems still use XP, won't run on anything but XP and can't be upgraded. Gotta love it, because, wait for it . . . . they have to be connected to the network. [IMG]

I'm thinking of starting a lottery with the winner being the one that correctly predicts when something bad happens. My bet is going on the coldest day of winter, so the pipes can freeze. They've got a budget to fix broken pipes but not to avoid the problem in the first place. :smack:

I have many machines running XP because of proprietary software for instruments and such. I still have a computer somewhere in a dept that runs 95 SR2 and an old 386 in Physics that is used repeatedly.

That's the sad part about Universities, most things need grants to buy new stuff and most of the software is 3g - 10g for a single license. I just recently "re-imaged" an XP computer so they could get our updated AV client (it had virus/spyware issues) to run a specific microscope program that many grad students use weekly.

    sigh, one day

What about running it in a VM?

xp for a dedicated purpose such as a microscope or hvac would be fine. however if connected to network, then that could be a weak spot for malicious software.

some banks, as most atms run xp, are paying ms to keep updating xp for them.

A VM won't prevent the problem, but it might make the recovery easier if there are good backups.

This is sad. I use windows pro to run XP in a vertual machine to operate my Toyota Techstream program. Damn is it slow! Fortunately, I'm not on a network, but I worry about updates and have to go online with the program. Man I wish Techstream ran on something more current.

Even all the Toyota dealers are still using 32 bit machines to run their XP programs.

It would reduce it greatly though. You just use the VM when you need to run the app. And it eliminates the problem of finding drivers. In the case of the one-off applications like the microscope, it wouldn't require using antique computers.

We use it where I work to run legacy platforms (Windows 2000 & XP).

True all dat. But for my HVAC system that has to be connected to the net 24/7 a VM won't protect them. I'm not losing any sleep about the end of XP, I just call it job security.

My netbook still uses XP, and I plan on keeping it for awhile. It is good enough for my kids to use until they start school.

It will work fine right up until it doesn't. There is much speculation about what the bad guys are going to do. My bet is they will attack XP because it is still so popular. The fact that a big percentage of ATMs run XP makes it an attractive target. And, Microsoft software being what it is you know there are still vulnerabilities in there.

At 12 years old XP has really run its course. If the kids are only surfing the web a Chomebook might be an inexpensive option.

I know the feeling. Upgrading over 100 this month. Working on some right now as well. Replacing 76 desktops that couldn't support Win7. gotta love the old equipment companies continue to use.

ATMs are protected by another layer of security at almost all locations and rely on the servers/firewalls of the host systems to keep out the bad guys so I have no bad things to say. Unless someone walks up to an ATM with a card that can gain access it's pretty much a moot point :D

Yeah this place is way behind. Running ridiculously old equipment. Some of the servers are still running windows 2000. They wouldn't even be getting these upgraded if me and my coworker hadn't pushed so hard.
