I got invited Monday. It looks cool. But, no one knows the new number google gave me, so for now its useless.

There are a lot if good features, I am looking forward to using it more.

What are the stipulations for becoming a Google Voice user? I have used gmail ever since it came out and never received an invite for Voice. Or at least that I know of..

NVM, I just found this..

"Google Voice is currently available for GrandCentral users only, but will be open to new users soon. In the meantime, please leave us your email address and we'll notify you as soon as Google Voice becomes available. To learn more about Google Voice, check out our feature videos."

Now the question is, what is GrandCentral? I've never heard of this.

grandcentral was bought out by google and google renamed it to google voice.

You had to sign up for an invite a while ago. You can still sign up, you just might not get in for a few weeks.

On a side not, I think that I found a way to have my wife call me for free...I haven't decided if this is good or bad.

GrandCentral used to be it's own entity before Google bought it. Same kind of deal as it is now, except now it's integrated with Gmail and the other Google services. I've had GrandCentral for about 2 years.

Some guy picks up, I politely tell him that they have the wrong number. He says, let me take a look. Then he says, well we talked to Bruce at this number on June 8th. WTF... so I get a little pissed and ask what his name is and who he works for. He tells me that he gave me his name and hangs up.

Now I'm pissed. So I check up on Google Voice to see what the number was he called me from. I call it back. It goes to some automated voice inbox.. no way to talk to a human.

So I then use the power of Google Voice. I create a new Google Contact, appropriately titled "douchebag" and I give it that phone number. Then I created a "group" called "douchebags" and I add him to the group. Then I created a custom answer machine message that states, "Hi, you've reached Bruce, I can't come to the phone right now but if you leave your name and number I'll return your call as soon as possible. If you are a debt collector or tele-marketer you can simply hang up and go f*ck yourself. Have a nice day". Now, whenever that number calls my Google Voice number, that message will automatically play. I love it.

Aside from that. Its kinda cool how you can transfer calls in the middle of a call, or have your home/cell and work number rings at the same time. Plus you get free long distance US calls. Not a bad gig.

That's one way to do it. You can also set individual contacts to behave like your "douchebag" group.

I think you have to assign the contact to a group to get it to behave that way. You can also simply block a number and it plays a message that the number is no longer in service. But thats no fun.

nope...I just checked it out with my wife. Works fine.

Your solution would work in case you want to add other douchebags to the list.

I use it for just the purpose you posted. Whenever I have to give a phone number to a place that requires it (and will probably sell it to telemarketers), I give them the GrandCentral number.
All my GC calls go to a pre-recorded spam message

Is this a free service by Google?

So they give you a new number that you have to give out to people...then you no longer use your other numbers?

It is free.

You've got it.

Here's how I'm using it...my wife works in a hospital and can't call long distance or use a cell phone. I work in a different area code, so she is always calling my cell phone from the hospital phones. Now I have set it up so that she calls the google voice number, it forwards to my office number. Now I don't have to worry about using my minutes.

I have one and love it. I mainly give it out to people i don't want calling me all the time.

One thing I hate, there is no way to block my caller Id when I call someone using google voice.

The other day I had to call my boss and I wanted to use google voice from home (long distance number) but I don't want my boss to know my google voice number. There is no way to block the caller Id. *67 does not work...
