Vacation to Galveston Island

Me and the wife are planning on taking a much needed vacation soon and we were thinking about Galveston island. It's only 7 hours from Wichita falls, not too bad. We have a one year old kid so we are kind of limited to what we can do. I figured the beach would be fun and I know my kid will like the sand.

Anyone from the galveston area? what is there to do around there? attractions? Good places to eat? Good hotels?

I'm not from Galveston, but I go down quite often. Moody Gardens is great for kids. Go to the west end of Galveston so you can drive on the beach.
Kemah is about 30 minutes away. It has a broadwalk with restaurants and carnival rides for kids.

I go there quite often also. Got engaged there.

Lots to do.

Moody Gardens...pricey but some of it is really cool (Imax, aquarium, etc)
there is a hotel there too.

Schliterbaun - water park, nice one but usually very crowded (what good water park isn't though)

The Strand - historical district. shopping, places to eat, train musuem - just re-opened from Ike 3 years ago. Need to visit candy store - and get a chocolate malt - best I've had.

Sea Wall - rent bikes, beach, plenty of good places to eat...Guidos, Casey's

Beaches tend to get less crowded the further west you head...which will eventually lead to San Luis Pass...good fishing area.

Hotels: San Luis - very hard to get reservations for and expensive.
Galvez - cool due to history and old look appeal.
Moody Gardens
Tremont - Strand area
lots of more affordable ones along sea wall.

That's a start...

Ferry ride is really cool...if you drive onto the ferry though, make sure to check wait times for the return. One time I drove on a didn't check, got to the other side and it was a 3 hour wait to come back. I ended up driving way around and just went home...sucked.

You can walk on to enjoy the ride without having to worry about wait time coming back. its about a 20 minute ride.

Thanks for all the help guys! This will be our first trip with our kid. my wife took to the DFW aquarium when he was really little but now that he is starting to walk I think it will be a lot more fun.

Here is my kid, Emery. He LOVES to be outside, as you can tell...tongue out and all.

Well we decided to go to Port Aransas. We are splitting a condo with another couple. It should be fun!

I'll post pics once we get back

My family will be renting a beach house this weekend down in Galveston, doing it because of my son's baptism.
