I could see the smoke on 290@6 so maybe 5-10 miles north of there. Hwy 6 was extremely hazy this morning, and you could really smell it.

Its a big place, Texas, and I have no doubt that there are fires here all the time. These fires in particular are not very old though.

540,000 is hard to imagine. I suppose it comes off as insensitive to be stunned when it is your hometown smothered in smoke in light of how bad it has been elsewhere. I guess this certainly gives me a sense of perspective.

how are all these fires starting?

I know that the North winds that have been blowing this last week have brought with them dry air (no humidity). Is it ppl being careless with cigarette butts or something?

yeah but it only burned 33ish homes, so your guys is way more devistating. well it depends how you look at it. homes can be re built pretty fast, forests cant.

but over 3.5 million acers this year! wow thats alot!!! but you probably dont see much of it becausethe state is so huge right?

The Magnolia fire started about 6 miles south of my house. It has restarted there 3 times and is blazing right now. My sister lives 2 miles from the fire and my cousin lives right across the street from where the blaze is now. As long as the winds keep coming out of the north we will be ok. As soon as the winds shift this mofo is leaving town!!!

Sorry to hear about you guys in Texas, I used to live there and it's a great state. Texas is hurting bad with the fire and droughts. It's hurting the cattle industry badly.

Hope things get better for everyone there!

Its too bad there's not a better way of policing litter bugs. I see people flicking buts and ashes all over College Station. While it isn't such a big deal in the urban jungle around here. Just a few miles away if you did that it would probably end in a fire right now. Police can't be everywhere and nobody will knowing drop a but out the window with a cop on there tail, but we really do need a way to stop these people. The only thing I think of is that you should be allowed to tag with spray paint someones car then call it into police so when they find them with a smoke filled car they can write a big ass ticket right there.

The fire in Steiner Ranch which burned about 24 homes and damged the same amt. started by highline wire blowing in the wind touching each other.

The fire in Bastrop started ??? It has burned 40k acres as of today and is still burning. 1400 homes so far.

Fire in Leander (outside of Austin) burned 300 acres including 6-12 homes. They are looking for 4 young people that may have started it. 2 boys and 2 girls in their late teens.

The fire outside of Bastrop in Cedar Creek may have been started by someone in their back yard. Still investigating. It has burned quite a few homes but no count yet. I think it is out now. This is where my mom and step dad live.

As someone said prior to my post, I still see people flicking their smoking cig.'s out their windows when driving. I would not be surprised to find out that more fires start that way than others.

This past week has been very sad here in Texas. Seeing the the homless people and watching the kids on TV that have lost everything is heart breaking.

Me and a few coworkers brought a big check and some supplies to our local volunteer fire departments today. They were very happy.

Things have calmed down a bit over in this part of TX. this is the first day where my neighborhood wasn't covered in smoke.

some fires still burning in the Austin area. Bastrop fire is still burning and is only 30% contained. A huge plane was flown in this past weekend and fitted to drop fire retardant. Well, it flew out today and flew to San Antonio to help control their fires.
A couple more pictures of the Bastrop fire still burning.

There are a lot more fires than are listed or seen on the TV. We have 300 acres in Leon county off of FM39 and CR495. We lost about 50 acres and it missed the houes and trailer. The place next to us lost everything.
