I sure don't... I dislike most engineers...

well to rephrase, I dislike engineers who have no practical "field" experience and refuse to listen to the guys in the field / customers... designing in an office is one thing, but making it work in the field is different.

Very well said sir. It's pretty damn easy to tell which ones have spent more time in the office than out in the field. I have only worked with a handful of engineers over the past 10 years who are actually well balanced in having both field and office experience.

 

I luckily usually have good ones most of the time... but there's always a few bad apples in this industry

Heck, I've worked in places where there were more bad apples than good ones lol. That's why I love where I'm at now. The good ones far exceed the bad ones around here.

We all know I'm an engineer, or at least most of you do. I try my best to get the new grads into the field as much as possible. You're right, it's one thing to design it on paper, and completely different to actually go to the shop and see how fucking big that W30xwhatever actually is.

I took the entire group to a fab shop last year just to show them the process. The next thing I want to do is take them to see some welding being done. Our spec calls out for full penetration welds, unless specified otherwise. I want them to see just how much work goes into a full pen weld, vs. doing a few minutes of calcs to see what size bevel weld will suffice.

Oh, and there are plenty of folks in my office that have never been in the field and are all book smarts. They have their place though.
