Did a little more hunting for beach conditions and found this report.

    5/15/2014 Friends of Padre Island

DO NOT DRIVE THE LOW ROAD AT THE WATERS EDGE EVEN AT LOW TIDE!! SINK HOLES DUE TO THE ABUNDANCE OF WEED ON THE BEACH WILL SWALLOW YOUR TRUCK. It appears some people were not aware of this.
    ..............

I know better than to drive the packed sand as I've seen it swallow full size trucks, but I hadn't considered the hidden

    Another report from May

I really hope the whole trip down doesn't look like this.

Thanks for the update. hopefully the seaweed has dispersed, but at least if it looks like that picture, we'll make good time down towards the inlet

It's only getting worse. Matagorda was nasty this past weekend.

Don't park near the water and let the tide come in.

That didn't work but it's a pic of a jeep with waves coming over the roof.

I've seen that happen as well. Once saw a couple in an SUV drive part way into the surf so they could "rinse their feet off". When I drive past the SUV was floating!

The wife and I did PINS in mid May. We drove all of the way down to the end. We had high winds on the beach and left a day early. There is indeed a long stretch of soft sand, took us 6 hours to get back to the visitor center. Gas would have been tight, glad i took extra. Was a fun trip.

We didn't have service at camp. I'm the first one back. The rest of the guys will be getting off the beach this evening and driving back to the Houston area tonight. I'll post some pictures a little later. Didn't take too many, but I'll see what I can put together.
