DFW Welders

Okay, I've finally decided on which sliders to buy. Now I need to find a place to get them welded on. I stopped by Yah-Te-Hay OffRoad in Lewisville and they quoted me $200 and it didn't really sound like they had ever heard of sliders much less how to weld them on.

So, can anyone suggest a place or a friend that can weld them on for me?

 

That's pretty bad if they have the word *offroad* in their name and haven't heard of sliders, but it doesn't surprise me either. If these sliders come with attached legs and frame plates, that sounds like a lot of $ for some welds. Now I could see it costing that if the legs, frame plates and gussets were loose, because they'd have to mock them up and then weld it all up, something I've been telling people that are local enough that I'd do for $75 if they bought my weld on sliders.

 

LOL, yeah, I first asked if they make them and he said, no, but smittybilt makes some that we can order. So, I immediately knew there was a misunderstanding. We eventually got online to show him what I was looking for.

The quote was for four welds per side as the sliders are all welded up and just need to be attached to the frame.

He also said they have a "hook up" with a local powdercoater. They just did a set of wheels for $500! I just laughed and said I was going to rattle can them. He advised against that because they would get scratched so easily. I did not have the energy to explain that touch up would be so easy.

He seemed really nice, but I don't think I would be comfortable giving them my business or my TRUCK.

 

It wouldn't be professional but I've got a new millermatic gas welder we could weld them on with if you wanted.

 

Hmmm, how much experience do you have welding? I have zero, so, I would just be an extra set of hands.

 

Drop by any weld shop and ask for them to recommend a shop or local guy, they know who buys supplies and what they are capable of

 

I never bash another company or their work, as people never do mine, but it sounds like this place is very expensive and I know if you do more R&D you'll get what you want for a very reasonable price. Just don't rush into it and don't let anyone talk you into something you don't feel comfortable with. I listen to the customer, and go out of my way to give them exactly what they want. Since they're ready to simply weld to the frame, I would think you could find a place to do them for $100 or slightly less. Good luck and post some pics for sure.

 

About a year, it makes real clean welds.

 

The most important part of welding to the frame is making sure to stich weld the sliders into position. This helps to prevent any wekening of the frame due to overheating of the attachement area. I am an above average welder and ended up paying a local shop to do mine due to this.

Did you end up going with the Demello Sliders?

 

Okay, thanks. I still don't have any leads on where to go. I'm going to order the Demello sliders tonight.

 

Well, the Demello's came in and I got them painted, but still no luck on finding a shop to weld them on. There are a couple of 4x4 shops in Ft. Worth that might be able to do it, but I would prefer to find a quality shop that's not so far away.
Any recommendations for a good shop in North Dallas, Plano or Frisco?
