It tows my boat fine. I can tell it's back there, but I've never had a problem. I towed it on a 650 mile round trip a couple weeks ago, she was a champ. Total weight with the boat/trailer/gear is around 4,000 lbs.

I went from a 2007 Tundra 5.7 V8 to a 2009 Tacoma V6 DC 4X4 w/tow package and it pulls my 19.5 ft Stratos bass boat w/175 hp Johnson with ease. Now, it does not pull it quite as well as the Tundra, but I also don't stop as often for gas for the Taco; result, more gas for the boat !!

Talking So glad to be here!!!

This is my first post on this awesome site!! You guys (and gals) are the best and always have intuitive information for all to learn. I love my 02' 3.4 PreRunner (only 40k)...never had a better vehicle. It has come through for me every time. My wife and I are buying a Seadoo Speedster 200 (430hp). Its total wet weight with trailer will be about 4300 lbs. I do NOT have the tow package yet, but thanks to all of you guys, I have all the information (towing bible, Sticy's .pdf's, Janster's tips, etc...) I need to prepare my Toy for a safe and reliable tow. HOWEVER...I have only one concern. I notice many of you who say "no problem" have 4x4's. I have a 4x2 and it's driving me nuts thinking about if my Toy can handle the tow. Out here in Phoenix, AZ there are a lot of mountains to go through to get to the lakes. Rear Diff lock cant help me in the long haul. Should I trade up (if so, to what) or should I relax. Why? Please be specific. Thanks

HAPPY TO BE HERE.

I've never really needed 4x4 for towing the boat. Maybe if you make your own launch ramp and just back down to the lake or if a ramp is really steep and slimy 4x4 could come in handy, but decent tires go a long way. I've never had to put this truck in anything but 2wd when launching.

I used to own a 3.2L Isuzu Rodeo w/ 205 hp. It pulled the boat ok, but pretty slow up major hills. Going from Colorado's front range to Lake Powell was slow getting over The Divide, but otherwise was fine. I did put that vehicle in 4x4 low when launching since I found with a stick shift it was easier and better control. With the larger sized and more powerful Tacoma, with automatic tranny, I haven't felt I needed to do that. My friend pulls his Mastercraft which I would guess is a little heavier than your setup with a 3.2 L '02 Tacoma. It is 4x4 and he's put the truck in 4x4 a couple times when launching for better traction when the ramp is getting pretty slick. But again, good tires help a lot in my experience.

If you take the precautions as you said about updating the truck to tow better and safer, you should be fine. Keeping the engine cool on those hills you mentioned would be more my concern than not having a 4x4. The tow package was very appealing to me on the newer Tacoma's and I'm amazed how much better this truck pulls the boat compared to Rodeo.

Thanks, Beeg and Sam. I figured as much. I just wanted to reassure myself that my tow will be fine if I take all the necessary steps to setting up my Toy for the haul. I had visions of my truck sliding into the water right behind my boat!!! I suppose I could lock the Rear Diff when launching. I do have great tires with a lot of meat on them. Sweet boat u have Beeg!! Thanks again.

Yeah, I leave my truck in 2wd when towing and launching, the only time I'd switch to 4 would be if the launch ramp is really slippery, but I haven't had to do that, and I've launched on a couple wet and rainy days, no problems.

You wont have any problems at all considering I tow my 4000lb boat with a 4cylinder.
