AFE Performance. numbers: Towing and non towing.

Well.... NUMBERS... after I Installed my AFE Pro Dry S drop in filter these are the results:

NON-TOWING (verified with Scangauge II)
better at highway speeds (from 65MPH to 70MPH)
WIND Speed is an important variable. (It does really affect performance).
SETUP: DC, 4X4, LB, 17" tires (OEM -35 PSI-), 5 persons (530 pounds) and 530 pounds of weight on bed.

BEFORE / AFTER
MPG 18.6 MPG @ 65-68 MPH / 22.4 MPG @ 70MPH
RPM 2000 RPM @ 66 MPH / 2000 RPM @ 70MPH

After 70 MPH you began to get a steady performance or a small lost on MPH or an increase of RPM.
Winds of 25-35MPH decreases performance almost 3 MPG @ 70 MPH and increases RMP to keep 70MPH up to 2350-2450RPM.

Not good aerodynamic, even with a LEER CAP.

TOWING -folding trailer, Fleetwood E3- (verified with Scangauge II)
better at highway speeds (from 60MPH to 65MPH)
WIND Speed an important variable. (It does affect performance).
SETUP: 08 TRD Sport, Tow Pckg, Four Doors, 4 wheel drive, Long bed, 17" tires (OEM -35 PSI-), 5 persons (530 pounds) and 530 pounds of weight on bed.

BEFORE / AFTER
MPG 12.8 MPG @ 60-65 MPH / 14.3 MPG @ 70MPH
RPM 2500 RPM @ 65 MPH / 2100 RPM @ 70MPH

After 62-65 MPH you began to get a steady performance or lost on MPH or an increase of RPM.
Winds of 25-35MPH decrease almost 5 MPG @ 65 MPH and increases
RPM to keep 70MPH up to 2500-2800RPM.
On 15 to 25 grades going up, there is no way to use D 4th is the only gear to get it up and is normal a 50MPH speed @ 2000-2250 RPM
Total aprox weight on RV is 3,000 pounds. Everything loaded (except water in their tanks).
RV tires are 15" at 50 PSI.
DAMN! I need the TSB on my '08, it has been reduced almost 2" in the back when towing and there is around 450 pounds tongue weight.

Not good aerodynamic, even with a LEER CAP.

END POINT... AFE is GREAT!

Seriously..??!! 2 mpg gain?? I get 20 mpg daily driver, 16 towing Fleetwood Niagara.. It's Houston, so it's pretty flat... AFE/K&N.. expect same results? Does it feel stronger when towing?

I just the TSB done, it's a great improvement for towing with a load in the bed. Great Truck, add cold air intake and get 50+ horses, and 2 mpg improvement??? Why wouldn't Toyota do it from the factory?

Gonna have to buy one now..

go with just a filter......not the complete intake. not worth the money.....and in no way, with an intake will you get 50 more horses.

all he put in was the drop in filter......just open the airbox and pull old one out, put new one in.

sam.....did you remove the secondary airfilter yet?

Nah, have not done anything under the hood. Have been very happy with it, I am not really into going fast, but Improving Gas Mileage and towing Gas mileage.. Big time interested. I was thinking about doing the cold air intake from K&N.. surely MVEGA1969's results are not "just" a better Filter.. are they??

yessir they are!!! just the filter!!! cold air intakes only work in the upper rpm's anyway........and these days,. trying to save gas........upper rpm's aint where you wanna be. remove your secondary air filter...locaed in the airbox, behind the reg. air filter, and put you an afe pro dry s drop in filter in. you'll have the truck idling better, and you'll have better gas mileage.....guaranteed. plus....with the afe.....you wont have to oil it.....just wash, and dry it!!!

Just like that? if it's just another filter, than I bet it is cheap.. I didn't see it on my Google search, got a link by chance?

Thanks,
Sam

Thanks for the info mvega. How many tanks have you run through your truck or mileage on the AFE? Since putting in mine, I haven't used the truck much so I don't have the data you have. Just curious. Thanks.

i haven't seen these great gains with the drop in yet, its hard to give it too much credit...I'd attribute most of the gain to the removal of the secondary filter. Overall i might have to sell and go AFE stage 2 54-81162 with the enclosed box...I love the way that intake looks..similiar to my old S&B for my titan - any offers for a slightly used AFE drop- in? shoot me a pm and its yours

Well, I have not removed the secondary air filter yet, and the numbers already presented has been the same. On my last towing trip of almost 500 miles (roundtrip), things got a little bit better (1-2MPG), using only PREMIUM ($3.71 -Exxon- Laredo & San Marcos gas stations). I felt that there is not enough gain (with my towing & non-towing setup) using the PREMIUM, I mentioned the two places where I fill up during this trip because even being the same gas company (Exxon) but different gas stations the one on San Marcos gave more MPG (3-4) than the one in my hometown (Laredo). When I got back to Laredo and after almost 4 full tanks of PREMIUM gasoline I fill it up with UNLEADED, I noticed almost immediately that you get faster high MPG (it goes easier up to 20+MPG) but in the long run it does not go more then 330 miles per tank.

These are the numbers, PREMIUM gasoline on my setup is not worth.
