You act like he is towing a 40 ft camper. This is just above the tow rating for the vehicle, as long as he drives smart he will be ok. Manufacturers put tow ratings on vehicles knowing that the owners will push the limits.

As long as you have the tow package and are a responsible driver then you should be ok. Just be careful of the brakes, probably a good idea to put on a brake controller, they are very cheap.

any time you walk out your door you risk an accident. Relax, he's not trying to tow 10,000 lbs. he is right at his trucks limits.

That setup weighs about the same as an empty 40' camper (7,000 lbs)... The load and trailer is small but very heavy, which is where the potential problem lies. The physical size isn't the issue here.

understood.....but you don't have to deal with the wind resistance of a 40ft and the unbelievable awkward turning etc of that big of a camper. The put the weight limit where it is because they know people will push it. Just look on the forum at what others are towing short distances. Just drive safe and be smart.

He hasn't said if he has a tow package or not, and even if he does, if he doesn't have a brake controller, he's not going to buy and install one TODAY... which is when the Bobcat is to be returned... and it's going to cost more than having RSC pick it up.

Without a brake controller, he has no trailer brakes unless they are self-contained.

Wrong-They put a weight limits based on engineering life spans and capability of components...so when you start free styling because "they know owners will push it" - You are taking the truck outside the designed limits and hoping that it holds up...Noy a smart gamble IMHO.

Rich, good point. I wasn't aware of the specific timing he needed, just speaking to the fact that he would probably be ok with the weight of this set up.

With a towing package and trailer brakes with the V6... personally I'd do it for 25 miles keeping it mellow.

Without the towing package or with a 4-banger?
    Fuck no.

Wow we have a fight on our hands. Get over yourselves. All we need is just one opinion and reason from each person, not a fight.

That's the biggest problem right there. I also find it hard to believe the trailer only weighs 1,000 pounds. So, at LEAST 500 pounds over the rating with factory tow package. You have to include the driver and any passengers in that weight as well. Realistically he'd be over 1,000 above what the truck is capable of with the brakes properly set up. I believe Toyota also specifies weight distrubuting hitch to be used to achieve the tow rating.

Call whoever delivered the thing and get them to pick it up. Not worth it. If you kill someone, that's criminal negligence.

Ya, but they didn't try to stop it and didn't care if the trans only lasted 5,000 miles.

OTOH... know how much power it takes to get a train over the Cajon Pass... I-15 out of the LA Basin into the high desert?

    2hp per ton.

    That's it.
5hp is enough to move a Tacoma over that grade.

Push the shifter to the left after engaging drive.
The dash indication will say "3" for the 2.7 or "4" for the 4.0
