What gas mileage you get towing?

I tow 90% of the time with my Taco. I have 5x8 enclosed trailer loaded with all my tools, I am guessing the weight to be at 2500lbs and I have 7x10 open trailer. I tow the enclosed one about 80% of the time. My gas mileage is around 14mpg combined. What is yours?

 

I get 11-12 mpg pulling a ~3600 travel trailer through hilly highways.

 

I have only towed the 6x12 uhaul enclosed trailer. If I kept it slower I was getting 15.5. On the turnpike at higher speeds I was getting 12.5.

 

I have a 5.7 Camplite TC loaded and I'm getting 16+ mpg. Only 2000 miles on the truck so I'm hoping to break 17 once its broken in.

I have only hauled my rhino on a 6x14 flatbed. I was getting about 12.9-13.5. Depending on the wind direction and speed. That was on the highway doing between 70-75.

 

You don't count you are a 4banger, not fuel thirsty v6 like me

 

I've only towed once last weekend with my " new to me" travel trailer. Weight 2700 pounds. I towed through the mountains with speeds averaging 55-65 got 14.5 mpg. I'm happy with that!

 

Towing a 06 HI-LO towlite 22ft. (3800lbs.) with my 06 prerunner v-6,I get 13.5 to 14 mpg. The trailer is lowered for towing. Also added towing mirrors from a 98 chevy 6-way electric (including power extend/retract). Photo's of my rig in my gallery.

i don’t really know. i have not towed very far, only about 30 miles or sell. i towed about 3k pounds maybe just a little over 3k. when i got home i still had right over or right at 3/4 tank, towed up hills and all at 70 or 75.

Fuel mileage will be lower while towing. How much, depends on your trailer. The very largest impact on a vehicle's fuel consumption is aerodynamics. Those trailers with a very low profile will have very little impact on fuel consumption. Those with a very high profile will have a profound impact on fuel consumption. Even the shape of the trailer will have a great impact on fuel consumption, a trailer with very aerodynamic curves, for example, a tear drop trailer, will have a lot less impact on fuel consumption than a huge square box.

Weight doesn't have a particularly high impact on fuel consumption, except during periods of acceleration. Stop and go traffic, merging onto a highway, and climbing hills. If you're doing a very long distance tow on flat straight roads, it is PURE aerodynamics.

The effects on fuel consumption increase exponentially with speed. If you want to save fuel, slow down, even slowing down just a little will have a drastic effect on fuel consumption. When pulling very large loads, I like to stick to roads with speed limits of 80 kph (50 mph). In addition to drastic fuel consumption benefits, there also tend to be less aggressive (dangerous) drivers on these roads.

 

My WORST EVER was 7.86 mpg, but I was doing 80 plus mph pulling the camper (about 4700lbs). I really don't do that normally, I had a family member in hospice care at the time. I normally get around 12mpg pulling the camper on the interstate at 70-75 mph, and 13-14 on highways at 55-60.

 

My last tank was 12.2mpg... Very poor in my book. I should have gotten full size with v8. I would have more power and would most likely get similair gas mileage...

 

Driving up in the mountains towing my boat and 4 guys to Canada I averaged 14-15. All highway and loaded down the bed with camping gear for 4 days. Being in a high elevation I guess that's normal. Back home at sea level I get 16-17.

 

Towing a 1600lb camper with additional 400lbs in the back @ 55MPH gets 17MPG and a 2000lb boat @ 65MPH gets 20MPG on interstates with the 2.4L manual 5 speed.

 

My first and only tow with this new truck is right around 10-12 MPG. Towing a empty 4000lb camper through the PA mountians and hills.

I keep getting friendly grief from my friend who has a big Dodge Cummins 6.7 Turbo Diesel quad cab truck. We took it to Montana and back while pulling my utility trailer full of fishing gear for 4 people. He was saying how he gets just 2 mpg less than I do pulling a trailer and 4 fat guys as I do with an empty Tacoma. This is pretty true except diesel is about 25% more than regular grade gas on our trip. When you do cost/mile vs the mile/gallon it doesn't look all that great. He shut up after I used logic and math on him.

It still doesn't matter to him because he gets a new $70,000 truck every 3 years from his dad's business and fuel is on a company credit card which is covered also. Worked out fine for me because the fuel on our trip didn't cost me anything.

Towing a 2000lb car hauler flatbed with an 03' mini cooper s last weekend I got 16mpg. Best tank so far is 18mpg around town. I am on my 3rd tank in this truck Hoping mpg around town will improve once I can keep my foot out of this truck!

 

My father-in-law has a F150 and gets about 7mpg when towing. I have a lighter travel trailer than his, and I get about 8.5 - 9.5 when towing.

Same trailer got me around 11 - 12 on my Tacoma (v6 engine).

So eh, the Tacoma absolutely got better MPG, but the bigger truck makes a 5000 lb trailer an easy tow.

Truthfully, my MPGs with my Silverado have been not much worse than the Tacoma, but they are still worse. 12 MPGs towing isn't bad if you're towing a brick through the air. If you're towing a low boy w/ no lift gate, that's a different story.

Wind resistance is your enemy, not the truck.
