08 Trailer wiring problem

I was foolish enough to purchase the factory (Part# 08921-04960) trailer wire harness for my truck. It was quite a job getting all the plastic panels etc. off to get under the dash to make the connections. Now I can't seem to find the 'Vehicle Connector (9P)," presumably a 9 pin plug and the "Wire harness (4P) connector." They must be somewhere in that jumble of connectors and wires behind the junction block, which I've lowered. Any suggestions would be most welcome.

If you have the towing package..... look under the driver side dash to the left on the side wall. It is mounted in place. Mine is white.

Its tucked way up there. Just above the junction block.

On my 08 w/ towing pkg I did not have to move or remove anything. Look just above the emergency brake pedal (rubber part). There is a trim piece that extends around to the door opening. Mine was tucked in behind that trim - mine is white.

Hope this is in time and helps!

Hi Lake Murray man.....thanks for the reply....I have a 09 without towing....I do see the white connector that will supply the brake controller stuff in the area you talk about....but .....but I don't see a simple 4 pin connector meant for the lites that is suppose to fit the OEM wiring I purchsaed from Toyota. I will look some more and if no success I will return my OEM and buy a Hoppy as the Towing Bible says to do. I expect no problems with the Tekonsha P3. Thanks Sincerely

09 Access without tow package...wiring problem has been resolved finally. Irish stubborness I guess. I went back under that dash and did find the missing 4pin connector and the white 7 pin connector for the converter was also there. I had mistaken the 7 pin for something to do with the brake controller which is very wrong. So my wiring is almost complete for the lites and now to the controller. Sop thanks for the input. bryanc... an almost happy camper

With regard to your 08 Access wirng problem. As I have posted to you , I was having the same problem, have now found the damn white 4 pin connector. My wiring is now complete. Now to the brake controller which i expect to be easier.....bryanc.

Lightbulb

I was doing some browsing and found this on Ebay. It is a towing wire harness that connects to your tail lights. Is this the same as what you guys did?

Good morning ...jesse2035
I have the Tacoma 09 Access 4cyl, No tow package. It comes only with a 4 pin connector for trailer lites. So I did infact use the over priced Toyota wiring kit for the lites. Brake controller etc was done individually with bought wiring stuff. The Tacoma towing bible explains several ways to do the wiring. So good luck

bryanc,

I just browsed the towing bible. I was actually a bit confused. I thought the wire harness I mentioned had the brake controller too. After going through the towing bible im pretty sure it is just for lite towing only.

I have an 09 DC Taco without the tow package and like a bunch of other people have now decided to tow.

Hi Jesse2035....
I have just finished the following; hitch installation, lights wiring, P3 controller and trailer brake adjustments, , and a seperate accessories circuit from the battery to the back end. The Brake light switch wire was confusing but is now clear. The blue wire as small as it seems in gauge is the correct wire for the brake controller wiring. All of my effort was in the end worth it. The big benefit is if something goes wrong you know it well enough to fix it yourself. So feel free if you have a question, there are others who also who have been and are very helpful. Good luck, bryanc

Note the brake controller does require a seperate circuit from the battery to the brake controller and hitch connector also. Toyota does not provide that for non tow trucks.

Four pin, Two pin?

I had to give up for the day on the 08921-04960 installation. I read everybody's post, went back, thought I had found the 4-pin connector and it only has 2pins!!! Won't hook up.

Where has everyone else found the 4-pin?

Hi Jlinderj....my 09 Tacoma 4Cylhas the 4 pin connector covered in black tape and bent up in the back of the main cylinder of wires that run vertically in the extreme left side of the foot well, left of steering wheel. It took me 2 days to find it.....not nice....but it was there. Good luck, bryanc

I found two multipin connecters and one 2 pin connector. I'll keep looking, but has anyone else found these other things?

Hi....Jlinderj
One of the square multi connectors should be stamped OMB, or OMG...or something like that and I beleive that is the connector for computer verification of function check codes or something....recommended not to touch that. There was another long narrow rectangular connector ...no idea for that also....I just know that if you look closely at the end of the connector from your dealer bought wiring....you should have a small square white connector and if your Taco is like mine....you should find the connector you need as I described on the last reply......behind the large taped round grouping of wires in the extreme corner left side behind the park brake cable........it is not easy to see nor find....that is where mine is.....good luck.....bryanc

Thanks Bryan, I'll look again. Just out of curiosity, did you happen to run across this female 2-pin connector that I found where they said the 4-pin should be?
