7 pin adaptor

I've read numerous posts about the adaptor and I'm a bit confused. I am a new owner of a 2013 Tacoma dbl cab w/tow package. As with everyone else, the adaptor did not come with the truck. Makes no sense but it is what it is.
I've searched the net and found several adaptors that appear would work.
I noticed some of the aftermarket adaptors have a ground in the center of the adaptor and some don't. The female portion on the truck would require an adaptor with the center ground.
Most of the adaptors I've found online do not have the center ground. Wondering if that would work or if it's best to get one with the center ground.
Also, I read a post that may have suggested the aftermarket adaptors have to be wired vs the OEM? I figured I would be able to buy the adaptor and simply plug and go. Can someone verify please as the descriptions on the sites do not say anything about having to wire the plug.

I'm in the same boat as you with a new 2013 taco and was wondering about the wiring adapters.(7 prong to 4 prong) What did you find was the best option?

 

they have adaptors that just plug into the 7 pin like a trailer would but it turns it into a 4 flat.

I got one at wal mart it is a 7pin round to 5flat and 4 flat.(i got the one that had the 5 flat just because it was only $1 more then the one that was just 7pin round to 4 flat. and figured i’d like to have it and not use it then need it and not have it.

 

Or convert your flat 4 pin or five to the 7 pin. Pretty easy and you never have to carry around that adapter. Etrailer.com has good info and products.

 

thats a good idea. IF the taco is the only truck that tows the trailer. I wish they had it set up like the new tundras where it has both 4 flat and 7 round. dads ’00 tundra only has 4 flat or i would consider making the trailer a 7 round.

 

I bought a 7 pin to 4 pin adaptor from Auto Zone and I could not get it to fit. The flat pins on the truck seem larger than the slots on the adaptor. I paid $10.99. Returned it and will be getting one from the dealer for $11.
Makes no sense that Toyota does not include the plug, especially when you pay for the tow package.

 

the 7 pin trailer plug was damaged so i went to replace it and found i had power only from running lights at the plug. blinkers , brakes all work on the truck. so is there another fuse or something im missing? oh ya i get an aux power also. is there a built in controller for euro style blinkers and american, u know seperate light bulbs for the blinkers or the brake light is the blinker?

 

I got a 7pin to 4pin connector from Uhaul. It's about $5.

 

I originally ordered an adaptor from Amazon. When it arrived I attempted to plug it in. It didn't seem to fit as i thought it would plug in like a plug going into an outlet. I didn't realize that the adaptor just sits in the plug and the cover holds the plug in place.
So I returned it and bought an OEM adaptor at double the cost. Same exact plug and fits the same.
Chalk it up to owner stupidly.
