In the 2012 manual 0n page 237 it talks about not using D for engine braking efficiency..ie downshifting to help maintain speed going down hills etc. Nothing mentioned about tranny temps, hard pulling, up hills, not using D when towing etc.

To each their own I suppose.

If you're towing on anything but flat road for a hundred miles straight with anything over a 1000lb trailer, it's hard towing IMO

The bottom line is not using overdrive for towing has been and continues to be the norm. I would agree that anything over the bed payload of the truck would be the starting point to switch to 4 from D.

Exactly, to each their own. Engine Braking efficiency and towing 2.5 tons goes hand in hand. Hills or not and Toyota states that in the 2008 manual.

Back to your regularly scheduled program. I am just tired of people misinforming other owners that "D" is blessed by Toyota engineers. It is not. If I had a nickle for every time, I could help pay for their future transmission replacement.

Here is what I tow. I don't use "D", because ethe Toyota engineers had the owners manual writers tell me not to. And it's just common knowledge after towing for 21 years.

3900 dry 5500 max

dig the wheels! I saw a TRD Sport towing a similar trailer the other day doing about 70 down the road! Obviously wasn't having an issue!

70 is not an issue in the 4,000 lb range around here. Somewhat hilly, but not bad. Get into the Adirondacks or the Berkshires and it is just smart to slow down. 24feet is the max length i would tow with this wheel base.

Here we are all loaded, hooked up, and ready to go later today!









This will be my first time towing with the new truck, and I'm expecting a huge improvement over our 2006 Sienna. I'm pretty sure the previous owner added a leaf (I don't think it was under the TSB). This trailer is very tongue heavy (~500# as is), and even with the trailer, the cap, and stuff in the back, the truck sits pretty level.

I know, its not the taco, but i don't pull with the taco because I still have the powerstroke.

Anyways I was only about 10,000 lbs over the weight limit for the truck.

Towed my dad's car into the city yesterday to sell it for him. It towed nicely, 6th gear in cruise all the way home, never needed to downshift up the small Hills between Camrose and Edmonton.

We bought it in early spring and it's the perfect size for me, my wife and son...queen bed in front, double in the back and the dinette converts into a twin. It's the smallest unit we could find with the toilet/shower combo...I thought it was overkill but I'm glad my wife talked me into it.

The Tacoma pulls it great but you definitely know it's back there. The dry weight is ~2,000 lbs but we're closer to 2,500 lbs when it's loaded with all of our gear. We camp around the Pocono Mtns quite a bit and I don't think I would want to pull anything heavier up there. I know the Taco would do it but I don't want a camper that will restrict us in any way. We want to be able to go anywhere we want and not have to worry about the camper bogging us down, and this one doesn't. I highly recommend this setup.

We have a '99 Rockwood Freedom pop up that is just about that same size and weight. Like you, it's just me, my wife, and our daughter - and it's the perfect size for us. I've given a TON if thought to getting a larger hard-side camper, but I really don't want to be worried about the truck's capability. As you point out, even with a 4.0L double cab, I can definitely tell its back there. A few times, I'll have to get down to 3rd gear on long hills. I can't IMAGINE towing a 4K pound camper around here (upstate SC, northern GA, and western NC).
Instead, I think we'll just stick with the pop up and not give any thought to where we can or can't take it. Here's a pic from this weekend in Hiawassee, GA.

I currently tow a 14ft Carson Rebel toy hauler with my 06 Tacoma..Trailer weighs 3400 lbs empty and I add about 600-700 lbs to that..Have a weight distributing hitch and no worries...

Also pull it on the sand at Pismo 4 or 5 times a year with a 2 wheel drive...Just air down all the tires and you are good to go......

How do you like your rebel? I just bought a Carson Outlaw 17 foot. Only used it once. So far so good except a few minor problems, but bought it used so that's expected.
