Should I trade for a bigger truck to tow?

I just brought home a new camper, 27 feet 11inches. The dry weight is 4,600 and the GVWR is 6,500. I had a WD hitch with sway control and had no problems. Grant it was only a 50 mile tow home and mostly flat. I never went about 2500 RPMS and my speed was between 60 and 65 mph.

I have a TRD DC long bed, 2009 and love it.

I have a Tekonsha brake control that is marvelous and I barley touched the brake to stop.

I must admit it towed easier than I thought but the real test will come later when I hit some more hills this month.

But if I have any problem I may have to trade it in for a bigger truck. There is a picture of the camper on show us what you tow.

 

Thats a big trailer, wow. 4600 pounds dry is one thing, if you put it on a scale youd touch 5k with add-ons and options. The dry weight is without batteries, propane tanks, spare wheels, etc..... I just did a 2500 mile trip with a Scamp 16, loaded up and all that, bed too, on my 05 Tundra. Did fine, but some of that terrain on the 101, N. Cali, S. Oregon was pretty serious. Cant imagine getting a go at it with a smaller and weaker truck and with a bigger, taller, and heavier trailer.... A newer 4.6L Tundra would be a good rig, better mpg than Tacoma and will tow nicely. Or you could get used to going 25 mph with the hazards on.

I would not tow that thing around the block and I doubt that it only weights 4600 empty. It's most likely twin axle at 3500 per making the GVW closer to 7000#

Yes. I definitely wouldn't want to tow that much weight consistently with a Tacoma.

 

I will be going on a short trip of about 120 miles and will stop and have everything weighed. If its over the limit, I will be trading it in.

But let's wait and see as I love my truck!
