Towing Scamp 19 5th Wheel

I'm looking to buy a brand new Tacoma for the purpose of towing a Scamp 19
5th Wheel. Specs:
Approximate weight 2400-2900
3500 pound torsion axle
Hitch weight 400 pounds
Includes hitch with 2” ball

Can anyone give me the best vehicle and configuration info to do this?

I would like to have an automatic transmission, dual cab. Is this feasible?

totally feasable. scamp has an interesting "5th wheel"! i tow my 16 foot scamp like a dream in my 2011 sport double cab. you wont have any problems.

 

What type of hitch does the Scamp use? Is it a typical fifth wheel hitch?

 

Get the tow package, AT, dual cab with the long bed(6' bed) for the 5th wheel.

 

The Scamp company will install the hitch for us.

What is "AT"?

My understanding is that 5th wheel and gooseneck towing is not recommended for the Tacoma.

From the 2013 owners manual:

 

The Scamp 19 doesn't use a "real" fifth wheel hitch like a 3/4 ton or 1 ton truck, so dont let that scare you off. By real I mean a full drop in huge hitch like a Reese 16k. Scamp uses a simple set up. Side support brackets with a bar running across with a ball attached. And the bar is removable.

A Tacoma V6 double cab with either the short or long bed would be great for the Scamp 19. Theres pics all over the internet of smaller and weaker trucks towing them.

Ms Jimmie, we've towed our 02 Scamp fiver for three years now. First with an 05 and now a 12 Tacoma. 4WD double cabs, automatic, TRD Offroad package with the factory hitch option for both. This combo comes only with the short (60") bed but the ideal mounting location for the hitch is directly above the rear axle and that's exactly where mine is. Clearance is such that I can back under the hitch with the lowered tailgate still an inch or so from the propane tank cover. Secure the hitch, set the safety chains, close the tailgate, plug in the lights/brakes, raise the landing gear and you're good to go in less than five minutes.

The TRD package or 4WD aren't needed but they sure give you more options when you get where you're going. AT = automatic transmission.

The Scamp will weigh a bit more than the factory tells you. Plan on 3300-3500 lbs in camping trim but that's not a problem for the Tacoma. You can also easily make your own hitch but I've heard the new setup from Scamp works with the composite bed. huachuca, I read your post and that is what made me post the question, but I should have looked at your pictures too!!! That is great, thank you! We are looking at the scamp 5th wheel, and my husband wondered how our bed would handle it. I will sure pass this along. That is a sweet setup!
