Transmission cooler ?

I have a 2003 6cyl w/ext cab (2 wheel drive) 63K miles.

I'm looking to tow a travel trailer (weight - 3998 lbs.)

Is it recommended to add a transmission cooler to the truck ?

One more question:

What is the 'ETC' switch on the dashboard for ?

Thanx, Mark

I'm guessing it's an auto since you're asking about a transmission cooler. I'd suggest a large one with an integrated fan if you're going anywhere mountainous. I towed a travel trailer of that weight with my '13 and the transmission temps were pretty high.

Oil cooler wouldn't hurt either.

I dont have an etc button, but I'm guessing it's traction control.

I had an 02 4x4 auto..... etc button alters when tranny shifts. Said to make towing easier but not much difference imo. Run a large tranny oil cooler. I ran one on mine rated for like 30,000 gvwr and no fan and it would only climb temps if a lot of higher rpm, low gear, slow driving. Get a big one with a fan and you will be good for about anything....

Tranny cooler is always recomended. Probably can help even if you dont tow.

ECT stands for Electronically Controlled Transmission. By switching to Power, it changes the shift points for more power (keeps higher RPMs by delaying shift into higher gears).

Honestly, I think ECT on power actually shifts normal and ECT on normal abnormally shifts early into higher gears for better MPG's.

If your truck didn't come with a tow package, you'll need the trans cooler, and HD clutch fan.
The cooler goes on the line that's connected to the top line on the radiator.
