OP is from South Carolina....you are not going to talk sense to him. Like arguing with a post. I hope he doesn't take out some innocent people trying to foolishly tow something he shouldn't.

Ok trailer brakes may be needed. I'm just use to older equipment and trailers towing drag cars 4000lb vehicle plus solid steel trailer fine with a i6 78c10 3on the tree no problem. Obviously I know not to run 70mph tailgating or flooring it at every red light. I just don't understand how its dangerous to tow close to same weight and suspension, axles, trans just different motors. I understand the v6 package on some have the same tow capacity ad the i4 due to not having tow package. So if I modified mine to a better tow package why couldn't it donit?

Good question. I'm not an engineer. But I have worked with NH Department of Transportation for 20 years and the laws here state you can't exceed the GVWR of your vehicle. With the weights you are looking to tow, you will definitely exceed it. Will you ever get stopped? Probably not. But in NH, if you were to get in an accident, say someone hits you- no fault of your own- you would probably be fined and almost certainly not be covered by your insurance. Which would seriously suck.

^THAT TRAILER WEIGHS 3000 EMPTY! ADD IN THOSE 3 FOURWHEELERS AND I WAS AT ROUGHLY 5000 WITH GEAR ADDED IN. I HAD TO HAVE TRAILER BRAKES AND AT 70 THE FRONT END WAS LIGHT AS HELL! SCARY TOWING.

OP, LISTEN UP. YOUR 2.7 LITER IS ONLY RATED FOR 3500 LBS MAX!

http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/tow...html#post35019

PLEASE READ THAT AND UNDERSTAND YOU NEED MORE TRUCK TO MOVE WHAT YOU ARE GOING TO.

Lmaoooooo, i can barely understand what OP is typing.
I dont tow, or ever plan on towing. But just driving my truck as daily, i already feel that the brakes takes too long to stop lol, so i cant imagine not having trailer brakes.

I figured it out only certain v6 models have the 6500 tow capacity. It has to do with braking (4x4 so factory has larger brakes for more weight), drivetrain cooling, and gears. Also tires and wheels effect it too.Thats why not all the v6 have high towing capacity. I got on the ford forum a guy had a 5.4 f150 and wanted to know why he couldn't tow over 5000lbs and the same motor in a 250 could tow 9000. Its because the brakes are larger, larger trans cooler, and lower gears every thing else on the trucks were the same. Same frame, axles, motors, trans.

Mine could physically tow it fine being a 2.7 but trailer brakes are a definite. The only issues would be drivetrain temps and braking and legal issues.

And your 2.7 is only rated to tow 3500 lbs... Please don't even think about risking it. Toyota tests these trucks to make those ratings for a reason!

Op, PLEASE do us a favor. Whenever you plan to tow, let us know so that we (and our loved ones) can stay away from that area. Many people have posted already that what you're contemplating is unsafe.

I'll step down from the soapbox...

You call him a dumbass when you are blatantly saying you're going to tow 5k pounds when your manual and everything and everyone on this site says you shouldn't.

Everyone's insurance is high because of people like you who disregard facts and ratings. For God's sake I hope when your truck fails no one is in the area.

And I hope you never reproduce. We don't need any more morons like you polluting this planet!

What I was getting at is how could a truck that uses the same frame, body, suspension, with only 100hp difference be 3000lb less towing capacity. But then I figured out not all the v6 options can tow 6500. Its the size of the brakes, vehicle weight, drivetrain temps, and gearing. The factory uses a system that measures how many inches per x amout of time a vehicle moves a load and stops a load to figure out capacity.
Then my second statement was if I add a cooler to keep temps down (which would increase capabilities) but without proper braking would not be safe.
But no one here could physically explain to me why it couldn't be done (except for the guy stating legal issues)

So conclusion is with a good cooler and good trailer braking set up it the rig is capable of doing it but not legally due to stickers.
All you guys who rock crawl and make custom rigs (not buying a bunch of kits and paying someone else to do it) didn't understand what I am saying.
