new to towing large items.

First the search doesn't work on my phone. I tried on google before posting. I use to tow 3000lb boat with my 01 2.4l (now 2jz) standard cab straight drive but I decated it to drag racing. So I bought a 13 4door sr5 pre runner its was supposed to be a v6 but thet messed up and got me a 2 7 but with more luxury option. My 01 weighs around 2000lbs with 1100hp so add tools and passengers probably 3000lbs I haven't gotten a trailer yet but just a 1 car hauler I'm assuming around 2000lbs? My question is will it tow it safely. I don't know if it has a trans cooler but I can add one and it doesn't have tow package. It says like 6400lb capable with 2.7 I know its strong enough I'm just worried bout trans.

I'm going to order a stant hitch with the tail light plugs I don't think I need a brake controller but I want to go from sc to tx for tx2k and I want to be ready

Take the 2.7 back for a 4.0 and maybe.

The 2.7 isn't rated for 6400lb. All the weights and capacities are in your manual.

Get trailer brakes and a controller, everyone else on the road will thank you.

It should be fine according to the book. The motor isn't the issue its the trans and suspension. Its says 7500gvtw and 3500 tw.

5000lb is fine for the 2.7 according to the book?

OP's saying 3k for the truck he wants to tow, including tools and such. And he figures 2k for the trailer.

Yes, it says that, which means he can tow 3500lbs. However, I don't understand that, my gen 1 2.7L was rated for 5000. Mine was a 4x4... maybe the 2WD is 3500?

Trust me, I tow a lot... do not exceed the capacity your vehicle is rated for. It's damn dangerous.

I'm gonna put a trans cooler it'll be fine. My 01 after I put a 1jz in it with an a341e it had 280hp but I towed a 3500lb boat at 90mph for 30+ miles so a 150hp truck should tow 5000lbs 40ish miles. Now the texas trip may just use my cousin and his dmax

You got to remember they're all the same frames and 6lug axles just different ratios. The body is the sane strength on all now the motor is different about 100hp. Now a v8 even in some 90s models only had 200hp. The only thing that would damage it would be the constant down shift but the road is mostly flat. Si if I add a large cooler it'll compensate temps. Now factory tow package is super small. I know I just put an apron, upper rail, and radiator support in a 12 today. My concern is pulling 5000 lbs around 50-60 mph not flying has anyone else done it with a 2.7 and what problems occured. Swaying, over heating, ect...

Its common sense obviously the planetary gears aren't going to explode from that much weight I'm assuming the trans are the same Toyota usually uses the same one on all models. Example a340e on first gen taco, supra, v6 runners then a341e on v8s with exception of some lexus over seas. Now the constant down shifting (if occurs) could heat trans up due to constant pressure increases. Now larger cooler keeps temps down and 150hp is plenty for 5000lbs. Now I needs someone with mechanical knowledge to explain to me why it wouldn't work. Braking should be close to v6 model the only difference is hp and torque.

Why did you create a thread asking questions if you are just going to argue with everyone and insist you are right anyways. I mean, you wrote that you don't think you need a brake controller? Maybe try opening your mind and really letting some people who tow regulary give you advice, like you asked for.

I just towed 2k lb of wood pellets in a 1k lb trailer with hydrolic brakes with my 08 double cab v6 with tow package and Dakar springs. Even with only around 3k you definitely feel it behind you up hill, lots of hills where I live, but don't notice it much on flat. My travel trailer loaded weighs close to 5k. I have electric brakes, sway bar and weight distribution hitch and feel that 5k is realistically what I am comfortable towing with this truck. Just because you think you can doesn't mean you should.

^^^^^^This, I tow a 12'enclosed and a 16' lowboy, each with more than 6500lbs with my v6. You have an I4, the weight that you want to tow is not safe for you or your truck. But hey, we can't stop you.

Wow what I derp thread this is turning out to be . I suggest you look up your states vehicle code in regards to what weight is required for trailer brakes. But besides that ...you will need trailer brakes!! I can almost guarantee that you are over the limit for your little 4 banger by what what you are describing anyways

This is what I tow so I know first hand about the braking capabilities ..

I towed our rhino and an ATV in the bed without trailer brakes and I will say, even that size of a load needed brakes. It felt like I had barely any brakes and I had to brake way before I regularly have to.
