i have a 20' boat weighing in at 3000-3200lbs with trailer, gear and gas. The truck can tow it fairly well but the rear end sags a lot. the trailer sits level when on the hitch but the truck will sag 2-3". Should I get a hitch with a greater rise to lift some weight off the rear axle or should i look into a WD hitch? I see guys towing 3000-4000lb boats/campers and their trucks are more level than mine.
** I do have 5100's set to .85" in the front but the rear is still a 1/2" higher when it is unloaded. I realize this will increase the angle but it still seems a little much

The Tacoma's very soft suspensions so that they can flex off road. In return you get soft springs that sag as soon as you put a set of golf clubs in the bed. With that much weight I think you should get WD hitch just so you can avoid your headlights blinding oncoming cars.

You want a little 'sag' for towing (tonque weight), but not that much.

You probably have the lame OEM 3 leaf pak that came with these trucks from the factory. There's an OEM TSB 4 leaf pak that exists..... If you can find someone who has a set of these who's willing to sell for cheap - you should be OK with those.

Otherwise, you'll need some help in the rear - better leaf pak, AAL (I'm not a fan of AAL's for towing), or air bags or something.

Yeah the rear suspension is stock. I thought about looking into a 4 leaf pack but i dont want the rear to be any higher when not towing or change the everyday ride. Id also rather spend my money on something that will work rather then trying a leaf pack and it doesnt then i still have to buy the WD hitch.

I installed a set of Timbrens on mine because of my 4600lb boat. It eliminated most of the sag and didn't change the ride, loaded or unloaded. I'd recommend it. Nice looking boat btw. How about some picks of it loaded up with some of those big Louisiana reds?

This is me towing my friends heavy trailer made for a larger boat and his aluminum boat. I have the 3 leaf pack Icon's in the rear. I was super impressed! [IMG][IMG]

I'm reading some boat trailer manufacturers do not allow WD hitches so i will have to do some further research. I tow my boat at least twice a month all year, some trips are 15 minutes and some are an hour tow time. i dont feel unsafe and the truck responds to alll situations well but i would like to eliminate the sag - for a reasonable cost. I wish the suspension could handle 50% on the max tow capacity a little better
Here are some pictures of my latest fishing trips

I guess i need to find out my current tongue weight and if my alum. trailer can take the forces of a WD hitch before i go any further. i know i am within my limits of towing but it kind of bothers me that the truck isnt more level. I'm just not sure it bothers me a few $100 just yet. Id rather be spending my money on a jackplate

Id say that set up weighs: trailer: 700lbs if not alum. (my alum. trailer for my 20' is 475lbs)
    18' boat: 1,000-1200lbs + 500lb motor = 1700lbs
so i would assume you are looking at about +/- 2500lbs after gas and gear. Mine is 500-700lbs more than you and im sagging twice as much

OMD Chevy leaf will level you out and give you more capability to tow/haul loads for <$100.

It's around 3000lbs for that boat trailer combo I towed.

I dont doubt it would be. the closest qualty junk yards are an hour away - one way and then i have to spend time referbishing. Im trying to avoid all of that on this truck. I did it all on my last taco. This one needs to last a while with as few of mods as possible becuase i would like a good resale when i upgrade

Whats speeds do you tow it? Some places require me to go on the interstate and at 60-65mph my CC wont hold without hunting for gears. I can hold 65 easier than 60mph. MPGs suck too. Other locations that dont require interstae i stay at 50-55mph and its just fine. All of this is in D. I dont need the 3000-3500rpms 4th gives since it is flat around here

I'd say put some airbags under it. I like mine.
