Add-on coolers are not difficult to install. The question remains WHERE to install it. You don't want to block too much of the condenser, or radiator because both need the cooler air passing over them to do THEIR job. If you already have an additional cooler you SHOULD be ok for normal towing and such. The key of course, as mentioned, is finding out what your ACTUAL temp is. Until then I wouldn't do anything.

Agreed! It sucks that the diagnostic costs more than the fix though. Oh well, hopefully I can Kijiji off the Edge Insight for close to what I paid for it then I'll have lots of extra cash to pay off the ScanGauge.

Great info. I've been considering a trans cooler for a while.

Okay, so luck has it that the cooler came in this afternoon. I quickly installed it with a blend mount and now I have to run back to work. I will post my TFT temps tomorrow once I get back. BTW this ScanGauge is sweet! I even have it spitting out my A/F ratio which is a huge deal since I'm supercharged and looking at pushing my tune in several years once the warranty is up! My only complaint is that is it has a ghetto display when compared to pretty much everything else out there... simple yet effective was there moto I guess.

Looks like I had a false alarm. After towing for ~60 miles the scangauge never showed a temperature over 220, and 95 percent of the time the temp was under 200. I guess there's no logical reason to upgrade to a bigger aux transmission cooler for now.

I didn't find it, vicali did the leg work on that for me and passed it along. Nice guy, positive rep added . Most of the codes can be found on the X-gauge site or various others. He lists a lot of them here:

    http://www.ct4wd.com/forum/showthread.php?6463-Vicali-2005-Build&p=98182

If you can't see them, here is the one for A/F:

    Air Fuel Ratio (should be ~14.7);
    TXD:07DF0124
    RXF:044145240000
    RXD:2808
    MTH:05B900800000
    Name:A/F

I'm not sure how super accurate it is, but it's better than nothing at all.

if you are going to tow a lot you should get a trans cooler to keep the temps below 220, with out an additional cooler temps can get over 250..

Hello gearcruncher, I have an 06 TRD V6 with an automatic. Is there a how-to guide or write-up for installing that cooler on that series of Tacoma? I am thinking about getting one soon but am a bit intimidated by the thought of hacking the tranny.

    Thanks GC!

Question: I wonder if the Gen 2 is any different in procedure from the Gen 1 in the linked writeup. The guys at the local 4Wheel Parts advised that my transmission fluid is pressurized and recommended I have Toyota change the fluid (~$180 procedure). In the write-up there was a spray of fluid all over the place when he cut into the lines. I'd like to avoid cutting into pressurized lines if it can at all be helped. I just envision bad things happening when Idiot A (me) cuts into Pressurized Transmission Component B.

Read the rest of the thread. With a scangauge I can read the pan and converter temperature on my Tacoma as I tow. Right now even on heavy grades I'm not seeing tranny temps above 220 except for a split second, so I won't be upgrading anything since the stock system is working so well. If I change my fluid every 40K like I plan I will be fine.

Right now the wife and I are looking at getting a full sized for her to take over towing duties anyways :D.
