    Hi All:

Picking up a small rv tomorrow. 14 footer.

Person selling it says it has break away brakes only.
Question. Can I use a brake controller with the current brakes on the trailer or will I need to install different type of brakes on the trailer?

Break away switch operates off a battery mounted on the trailer with a cable attached to the TV. If it weighs less than 2000# you can pull it home and figure it out from there. Check the laws in your state for brakes and break away switch requirements before driving too far.

Break away brakes are electric correct? If that is true, then I should be able to use a brake controller correct? The trailer has a seven pin connector if that is any clue.

Should be able to link up, breakaway is usually part of a whole brake system, as a safety feature.

Surge brakes also have breakaway features. If the trailer comes away a pin gets pulled and applies the brakes.

To answer IITYWYGMS question in post #3.
Think about this: If the trailer breaks loose, the TV plug will will disconnect. Thus no power to activate the brakes. See my first post, Break away switch operates off a battery mounted on the trailer with a cable attached to the TV. This is a separate battery like one on an RV travel trailer. Go to etrailer.com they have videos of installing them. I think your confusing a breakaway system with regular TV controlled braking.
