Discoverd that although I purchased the tow package option, and was supplied with the pigtail connector;Toyota informs me that my truck is not prewired for installation of a brake controller. Has anyone else experienced same and did you correct by hardwiring?

Those connectors can be a pain to find so you may actually have it. Whoever told you that could have easily been mistaken.

And if you do find your plug in you should use a direct fit plug from Tekonsha so you dont have to deal with wire splicing.

If you have the tow package from Toyota, you have everything you need for wiring a brake controller. Toughest part is finding the pre-wired connector hidden in the jumble of wires. Keep looking, and you will find it.

Just finished installing a Tekonsha Prodigy P2 brake controller in our 2015 DCSB Tacoma. Like others here have said, the hardest part of the install for me was locating the factory plug in the mess of wires. I did locate mine after several minutes of looking. Did not have to remove any panels to reach it. Mine was located a couple of inches above the drivers side panel to the left of the parking brake. It took me several tries to line up the connector from the supplied pigtail to the plug. I soldered the supplied pigtail to the wire bundle that came with the brake controller. Put heat shrink over the solder joints then taped everything up and put the wires in some automotive wire loom I had in the garage. I routed the wiring from the factory plug, over the parking brake, brake pedal, gas pedal and behind the air duct and dash and into the brake controller. Between the supplied pigtail and wire that came with the brake controller, it was just long enough to reach where I mounted the controller. The controller is mounted below the steering wheel above my right leg. Both my wife and I can get into and out of the truck without banging our knees and we can still reach the controller while driving. Here are a few pictures showing the factory plug and where I mounted the controller.
The entire job took just over an hour from start to finish.
