That's the tow rating of the hitch not the truck I belive.

Example: Just cuz u have a hitch that can do 15,000lbs doesn't mean the truck can.

Also. As u can see on ur hitch it says see owners manual for vehicle towing weight.

Howdy guys. I'm looking to buy a Tacoma 14 but need a answer on towing. I've read this thread over and over. I have a 5,500 lbs travel trailer I had been pulling with my jeep GC rated at 7200 with no problems. I always tow dry anyone think it would be an issue?

I only tow once or twice a year. About 2-3 hours max.

What is the length of the trailer and what is the typical terrain?

You'll need a weight distribution hitch with good sway control for sure.

Sounds like you are experienced at towing, and 5,500 lbs is within the towing capacity, so you should be OK.

It's 28 ft Coleman dual axel. Flat terrain of North Carolina foothills to myrtle beach at most. I have weight distribution hitch and sway control on it already. I was towing with f-150 and it was like there was nothing behind the truck. But that stinking ecobust kept going into limp mode so I got rid of it for the jeep overland with hemi and it pulled better than the truck but cut some bills for a couple years now back at it. I have a Tekonsha p3 Brake Controller that would be installed. My thought is if I go this route is to always have my family follow in car.

I have a 2013 Tacoma TRD Off Road Package. Last week I took it on a camping trip, with the bed full of gear and a trailer with two 4-wheelers. It pulled it okay, but I felt like I was pushing the RPM's and my foot was in the floor a lot. What are some of the best options to increase the horse power without voiding the warranty? Toyota Dealership says Super Charger, but there's got to be a better option that isn't as expensive. This seems to be the thread with all of the towing information, so I thought I'd give it a shot!

You'll be just fine. I max the tacoma out at #6500 all the time in every terrain. It's slow in the mountains but it makes it up no slower than a semi. And on flat land it works great.

Thanks! Looks like I need to start saving my pennies to get that done. I don't tow a ton, but every fall during hunting season, I go up every weekend. Driving up the canyon with that load I could almost see my gas gauge go down as my RPM's screamed at me. haha

I was just hoping there were other things I could do that would give me a little more of an edge. Like cold air intake system, exhaust, etc. etc. I thought about a chip, but I think that would void my warranty, right?

    Thanks for the input....

I am not 100% certain, but am fairly sure that you can't, at least not without some significant modifications. I say this mostly because in campgrounds I see what the motorhomes drag around. Jeeps are popular...I think it may have something to do with being able to keep certain parts of the drivetrain from spinning by putting the transfer case in neutral or something. I think Saturn cars could be towed 4 on the ground too.

I once towed a jeep cj5 from PA to FL in 1980. I was told I had to undo the U joint and tie up the drive shaft. But I would think you could ask toyota about that.

Okay, I have a V6 w/Tow package, so I have the hitch receiver under the bumper. There's also a spot on the bumper where you could put a ball in too.

Great. But what are the other two holes on either side for?

Do not put a ball in your bumper or you will twist that sucker like a pretzel!

The other holes....one on each side of the receiver? Those are to hook up your safety chains. Crisscrossed.

No, not the spots for chains, those I know. But on the bumper there are three holes, each with some sort of plug in it. I'm sure the middle one is for light duty towing, where you'd put the ball. IIm curious about the other holes in the bumper. they have some sort of plastic screw in them.
